I don't get the ice bucket challenge. People seem to do it to prove how brave they are. Aren't the videos proving how cheap they are though? I dunno, I don't follow social media much, so my understanding of the challenge is if your tagged you can either donate to help sick children or pour ice water over your head. And it devolved into "Haha, lets do the ice bucket challenge to show what a bad ass I am for surviving cold water!"

While it may seem like people are just dumping ice water over their head, this challenge is doing a great deal of good. Everyone I know now knows what ALS is and why its important to help those who have it.
In addition to that, the awareness raised by the challenge has allowed the ALSA charity to bring in ~42 million dollars since it started. This is opposed to 2 million in the same time last year.
A goodly number of people both do the challenge and donate as well, as my family has done.
We need more awareness though. The NIH had it's budget chopped by about 6 BILLION dollars over the last 10 years. This is the organization that funds much of the research on diseases.
So the challenge is great, but the best thing we can do is write to our congressman and tell them we want funding moved back into the ALS, or whatever charity you may support, coffers.
