Porter Robinson | Worlds | 2014 | EDM, Indie Pop
"Worlds" is Porter Robinson's debut full length album. He has released one "Spitfire" EP prior to the release of Worlds (and a few singles iirc). "Spitfire" showed Robinson's skill at making EDM music and it is quiet good. However, with the release of "Worlds" he seems to be making a departure from the usual EDM stuff. At face value it's easy to see that "Worlds" is just EDM mixed with Indie Pop. You could easily compare some of the songs off the album to acts like Passion Pit or MGMT (and people have) but with an EDM twist. Some might even say that it sounds too much like those bands and doesn't come off as all that original. Yeah sure, you could make that argument easily. But, personally, I don't much like to judge an album based on what it sounds like. I know that seems weird...if you can't judge music based on how it SOUNDS...then how can you judge it at all? Well, to be honest, I'm no music expert so I can't say how much something sounds. I judge music based on how much I like it. To say that I enjoyed "Worlds" thoroughly would be an understatement.
Aside from that I find the album to be fairly interesting. To me it almost seems like "Worlds" could be some sort of vague concept album based a...world, if you will...of Porter Robinson's creation that we know nothing about. I can't say that as fact but it's the feeling I get from listening to the album.
Divinity [9/10]
A good opening song that really sets the pace for the rest of the album.
Sad Machine [10/10]
The second of four singles released and the first single I listened to. It features vocaloid vocals.
Years of War [8/10]
This song was okay. It seems fairly similar to Lionhearted thematically...at least in my opinion
Flicker [10/10]
The fourth single. This one actually took me a few listens. The repeated robotic Japanese samples seemed a bit annoying at first. But as the song went on I slowly got used to it and after a few more listens I came to really love this song.
Fresh Static Snow [7/10]
Not a bad song by any means but one of the weaker songs imo. This song also features vocaloids.
Polygon Dust [8/10]
Pretty okay song...I was really digging the chippy synths in it
Hear the Bells [9/10]
This was a good track with a really moving instrumental.
Natural Light [9/10]
A fairly short...kinda ambient track. I consider it an interlude.
Lionhearted [8/10]
This was the third single. I LOVE the beginning melody on this track but otherwise it's just okay.
Sea of Voices [10/10]
The first single (although I didn't listen to it until much later). A sort of droney song that gains momentum throughout and ends with a bang. This was my favorite track but Flicker eventually beat it out.
Fellow Feeling [10/10]
The song starts with some strings. After some vocal samples there is just a huge noisey glitchy drop "drop" that is easily one of my favorite singular moments in the album. Then it's back to strings.
Goodbye To a World [10/10]
An amazingly beautiful closer track. This track is what really makes me consider the possibility this might be a concept album. It really seems like something like the final episode of an anime.
Overall: 10/10
Summary: While this album it may seem that this album isn't all that experimental it is a breath of fresh air. With nice production and a clear influence in games/anime it makes for a fun and enjoyable listen.
