So I Was Chatting With My Friend. . . · 1:17am Jul 9th, 2014
So, I was chatting with my friend earlier today about fanworks. Particularly brony fanworks. I was venting my frustrations about what I saw as inferior work. I even went so far as to say that some people shouldn't create.
My friend didn't take too kindly to that.
She was quick to point out that was I saw as talentless shlock was just someone who hadn't refined their skill. That artistic skill was something that had to be striven for and trained rather than just appeared for some people and didn't come for others. What I saw as someone who wasn't trying was more likely someone who just needed to learn and might not have known any better.
Needless to say, I was rebuked.
I came to realize just how short-sighted I was actually being and far too quick to judge. I want this fandom to create things that are genuinely good and instead of trying to help people who lacked skill or instead of me focusing on how I could improve, I resorted to silently judging and sticking my nose so high up in the air, all anyone could see was inside my nostrils. Without really seeing it, I let my standards get too high and became a pretentious jerk.
So, I wan to take the chance to apologize. I was never openly mean, but saying nothing and just writing someone off as untalented was just as unfair. I will admit, that there are some works on this site that are just bad, but I also needed to learn that maybe these folks just need some friendly tips and constructive criticism. Celestia knows, I could use some every now and again.
While, I can't promise a complete turn around I will make the effort to try. I want this fandom and this site to be something really awesome and creative and I want to help with that. So, again, I apologize for my attitude and will try to actually leave constructive criticism and friendly advice when I can. And I ask that you all do the same for me. I know I feel really encouraged when you guys compliment my work and kindly point out mistakes and I need to be willing to do that with other writers.
So, here's to a new and enlightened perspective. Thank you all for reading and have an awesome week!
