Friends Forever #6 review! · 11:06pm Jun 23rd, 2014
It opens with Rainbow Dash being an egotist. It seems a far off country of Diamondia has invited her to perform. The rest of the Mane Six show up to remind you they exist.
When Rainbow Dash arrives, she finds it is populated with Diamond Dogs. She tries to leave, but they explain that the ones that kidnapped Rarity were outcasts due to their nature. So, averting the Always Chaotic Evil trope, I can dig it. No pun intended.
The Dog she's talking to, Jim, manages to keep her there by playing to her ego. He then takes her to see their queen, who is none other than Trixie.
Rainbow Dash is shocked, but Trixie says they'll talk over tea. She dismisses Jim, and as soon as he's out of earshot she throws herself at Rainbow Dash, begging for help. She explains that a while ago she dropped some of her gems in the mud. The Dogs came upon her and mistook her for a Diviner, being able to find them. Trixie played along at first, but now wants to leave. She's been holding the Dogs off with a few excuses, but she can't keep it up forever. She sent the invitation to Rainbow Dash, being sure to play on her ego, to get her to come and help her.
For the first time in a while in a pony work, the characters go for the easy solution and the pair try flying out. However, Trixie hits an invisible barrier. It seems the crown stops her from leaving. Rainbow Dash considers just leaving her there, but decides to help her.
I'm a little iffy on Rainbow Dash here. I suppose if any member of the Mane Six were to be abrasive enough to abandon somepony they thought deserved it, it would be her, but this seems a little much.
Rainbow Dash gets the Dogs to build Trixie a review stand while casually bringing up the crown. The Dogs say that apparently a lot of kings and queens have run off, so they made sure the crown keeps them there. It will come off when they lose faith in her. And there's a joke about one of the Dogs saying something smart that you've heard a million times before, like on Toy Story 3.
Trixie and Rainbow hatch a plan. The next day, while Rainbow performs, Trixie silently pulls diamonds from the vault. When Rainbow Dash is finished, Trixie offers her all the diamonds in the treasury, along with other outrageous proclamations. As she goes on, the crown slips off her head and around her neck.
I was half expecting it to reactivate and act like a collar, but Rainbow gets her out with a Sonic Rainboom, making it look, to the dogs, like she disappeared along with all their gems.
Far away, Trixie and Rainbow land, remarking that making the gems fall through a trap door will keep them busy looking for that and not them. The two part on good terms, and there's a happy ending, except that the Dogs now have Rainbow's address and probably aren't happy with her.
All-in-all, okay, but kind of simple. I was hoping for a battles of the egos type story. But it was good for what it was.
Pinkie Pie and the Rockin’ Ponypalooza Party is next.
Two of the biggest MLP egos on one stage. Now that's entertainment.
I wonder what the chances are of any of these stories being made into actual episodes of the show, like how manga are adapted into anime?
I have to say that this comic is the third best of the friends forever series, because the way they handled Trixie was amazing. If Trixie ever shows up again I'd love to have her be written similar to how she was here, except with her third person speaking poping up on occassion, because without it Trixie just isn't the same.
The Fluttershy/Zecora issue wasn't too bad, but I loved seeing Twilight and Shining Armor interact a little more. The best of the series still remains the second one, but there's still time to top it.
Let's see how well the IDW staff do with Luna and Pinkie Pie. I hope we get an apology for what Pinkie did in "Luna Eclipsed".
Hmmm... interesting story. Very interesting.
