    Where I've Been

    Wow... it's been a while.

So... yeah. Where have I been? I've been at home. And I didn't realize it until this weekend, but I've been pretty unhappy since this whole mess with the pandemic began.

    Look Before Your Sleep

Well, here we are. Another inevitable episode about these different ponies who had little in common now having to put up with each other after having a mutual friend in Twilight. I can picture this already having happened between Rarity and Rainbow Dash, having learned to live with each other after having a mutual friend in Fluttershy.

    Where I've Been

Yeah... I'll bet you're wondering about my absence lately. I swear I didn't mean to take one.

Until the pandemic actually ends (and I mean ends, not just when everything opens back up) I'm going to be working overtime. I'm hoping it's coming to an end, but there is still mandatory hours for June.

I have a lot in the pipes, and I will still rereview the series. Just... please be patient.

My Little Pony: A New Generation · 2:34am Sep 26th, 2021

Well, the last month has been a nightmare of overtime and fixing up my house, but today I managed to see the premiere of G5.

Okay now, there were two main concerns I had from the trailer. The first was that this series is effectively undoing everything accomplished in Friendship is Magic, something that always rubs me the wrong way in sequels. It's less so here, since it happened so long in the past that you can still imagine the main characters had a happy ending.

The second concern is the CGI. Not in the movie itself, this was made with a theatrical release in mind. But the series itself is going to have a budget cut. And are some of these VAs going to commit to a full series?

But on to the movie itself: it was a promising start. The new characters have similarities to the Mane 6 without being carbon copies. Sunny is similar to Twilight, Izzy is like Pinkie, etc. But I can see differences. Sunny is fascinated with friendship right from the start, for starters. She's a promising lead character. She seems pretty closed to the ideal hero right now, someone who is just trying to do the right thing. I always have a soft spot for these kind of heroes, so I'm quite interested. It looks like this is going to be the second generation in a row where the main pony is my favorite.

Hitch is interesting. He's like a more down to earth Rainbow Dash, big ego with the skill to back it up, but more focused on the task at hand. I bought the friendship he had with Sunny well enough.

Izzy is... well, she's Pinkie, though with less out there moments. Funny, but not sure how I feel about it.

Pipp and Zipp come in later, and they... well, they're set up to be a foolish and responsible sibling pair with some baggage between them. It's something I hope gets followed up on.

Sprout is the best villain for a movie like this. The ultimate embodiment of the saying "A mob's intelligence is equal to that of it's dumbest member." A normal guy raised in a bigoted society given power through those same bigoted beliefs. If he shows up later, he probably shouldn't be the villain anymore, at least not the Big Bad.

The music... well, it sometimes takes me a while for a song to sink in. But even a few hours later, "Danger, Danger" is the only one I remember. Still, I don't think any of them annoyed me...

The plot is basically a road trip movie to do some early world building, but I think it's solid. A good way to start.

I'll discuss my theories on the future series later, but for now, a promising start.

It was a very good start i thought it might be a disappointment but I was pleasantly surprised by it.

I sure enjoyed it but I know it's gonna take awhile to get used to.

I'll give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Most of the interactions were pretty believable, and while seeing pony society regressed back to separatist clans was disheartening, I can't say it wouldn't be an impossible scenerio. It certainly gives the G5 characters a lot of territory when it comes to potential storylines, though.

I enjoyed the film more than I thought. The series is in safe hands.

Honestly better than I expected

It was a surprisingly good movie. From the trailer and promos I honestly though it would suck.
Had a couple of cringe moments and one or two songs I didn't particularly care about, but otherwise it was pretty good.

Though looking at it, I don't know if I would be that interested in an entire show about these characters. And also, definitely not sure if I want to read fanfics about any of them.

I finally got around to seeing it, and I think the biggest issue I had with it is that this really shouldn't have just been a 90-minute movie. All of Equestria losing its magic, the three pony tribes separated into mutually-distrustful communites, and this happened so long ago that no one knows how it happened, or why... this is not a small problem to be overcome, and it shouldn't be solved in just a few days with most of the MacGuffins conveniently located in the first places they look. This is larger-than-life, Epic Quest-level stuff which really should have played out across a full season of episodes, with Sunny and co. facing multiple dangers and difficulties, having to work through mutual misunderstandings from a lifetime of prejudices in order to pull their friendship together, with red herrings and misinterpretations of ancient scraps of lore taking them down false trails and disappointments before they finally achieve the goal of their Quest.
