Late impressions of Twilight's Kingdom · 10:49am Jun 10th, 2014

I have to be honest... Twilight's Kingdom kind of upset me.

Don't get me wrong, it was great - epic fight scene, friendship magic, etc. What I disliked was, oddly enough, the destruction of Twilight Sparkle's home and replacing it with a castle. It just seems to me to be another step in separating Twilight from who she was at the beginning and replacing her with something else entirely - something more along the lines of what MLP was before Lauren Faust intervened. She goes from studying magic to being a princess (given princesses seem to be naturally magical, it's still quite a jump), she goes from living in a tree library to a crystal castle shaped like a tree... sure, she's still Twilight Sparkle, but it seems the show is trying to push the Princess thing and completely offset all the things that made the series fascinating to begin with.

I initially had no problem with Twilight becoming a princess, but the more I see it, the more I dislike it. It just feels like the Twilight Sparkle that we knew from the beginning is being subjugated with some other pony that just happens to act very similar. Oddly enough, it was reading the recent issue of the comic that made me realize it.

I understand Hasbro wants to sell toys and all, but I'm starting to wish they'd have thought up other ways to do it. I hate to think that in this next season every trace of Twilight Sparkle will be replaced with Princess Twilight.

But there's the whole big thing at EQD where they had Hasbro bring back the library in like a day...

2198138 Well, you see, they had a blog post and retweeting stuff at EQD(and fimfiction too) where they convinced Hasbro to bring back the library. It was a very easy battle, and I wouldn't be surprised if Hasbro was planning to just pretend the library never blew up in the first place. So the library will still be there next season, although whether or not it'll still be Twilight's living quarters is uncertain.

The library itself is not really the issue for me. What bugs me is that it's destruction and moving Twilight to a castle seems to be another step in burying "Twilight the bookworm" and replacing her with "Twilight the princess". Sure, she can be both, but Hasbro doesn't seem too concerned with retaining defining character traits.

2200900 Well, the primary purpose of the show is to sell toys to little girls, not to create a beautiful work of art that will live on through the centuries. And I'd rather have an extra season or two from the funds of toy sales with a Princess Twilight than having it end with book worm Twilight, myself at least.

I know that - I've stated as much in the blog. And I'm afraid I'm not much of a statistician, so I can't say if Princess Twilight actually could "buy" even one more season.

You seem to be under the impression I dislike the change; I don't care about the fact they made Twilight a princes or an alicorn. This is not the case; it's fascinating and I was curious to see where they'd take it. What I dislike is that she's being turned into an entirely different character that overwrites the one the show started with. It would be like Applejack opening a restaraunt chain that doesn't sell apples.

A few more seasons is cool and all, but what's the point if the characters aren't even the same anymore? At that point you might as well move on to G5.
