Site Post » Audio Adverts on Fimfiction · 5:35am May 10th, 2014
Lately I've been getting a lot of reports of audio ads on Fimfiction. Some people are concerned the site is infected in some way, and while I'm confident that is NOT the case, I have not ruled it out entirely. Most likely the issue is Adsense, which right now is turning into even more of an awful service, and throwing up poorly verified ads.
If you see a page with an audio advert, please report it to me. The best way you can possibly report it is to send me a PM with the following information:
1. The page you saw the advert on (url please)
2. What adverts can you see on the page?
3. What was the audio advert playing? (sometimes it seems to have no relevance to the ads visible).
4. A pastebin of the entire page source ( press ctrl + u and copy everything into pastebin )
5. What browser are you using?
6. Are you using any extensions in your browser? This is actually the most likely reason I think...
Many thanks.
Oh and it's the final episode today huh. Get hype.
More importantly though, it's Eurovision tonight baby
Oh thank fucking god, a solution. Will alert you in due time.
Here comes a gigantic shit show in the comments! Let's watch!

Thanks!
Also, block doesn't work lately. Just another thing.

You know T-shirts aren't nearly as annoying as ads, and they bring in dinero too,
.... shutting up now,
I finally gave in and got adblock, because I'm paranoid of viruses.
The two times it happened to me was when I was reading a chapter. Since the story loads with the whole screen dedicated to the text, it covers the ad that's running in the background.
It happened again right now as you can see in the image below, but since it's not in a story page, I can actually stop it.

....ads?
Oh yeah, those things I don't get because I took literally 15 seconds to install a blocker
Edit: Wow, people are getting that butthurt?
Every thumbs-down only increases my giggle factor.
Thank gawd it's not just me. I was half-worried that I had a bug on my computer or something.

Fimfiction appreciates your continued support of our website.
But I like learning how to rock red lipstick, as told by the invisible woman on Fimfiction!

When they're screaming audio over my music, it's kinda time for them to go.
Plus it's nice on Youtube
I would report pages but every single page I visit now has audio ads! I hope there is a fix...
So far I never had this problem but I'll report anything if it happens
Easy fix:
Use Internet Explorer for fimfiction, as IE doesn't get audio ads.
Never mind, just a video ad. Is that the same thing?
It happened on this very page, in fact. There was one video, that could be paused. There was still another one somewhere blaring.
If there's one thing The Simpsons has taught me, it's that I should bar my windows and lock my doors whenever ads are forthcoming. It hasn't failed me yet.

I never got ads on this website and I have Firefox...
2094847
I can only go off what I know. They're possibly a new Chrome addition?
I use Firefox, keep AdBlock Plus off on fimfiction, and all the ads I get are about Fenix flashlights, which actually fit my interests. No problems on this end, chap
Thank u knightly for doing this towards us. Those sound adds are realy enjoying to see and hear.
A quick google browse and the issue seems to mainly be with a Google Chrome extension. The most common listed is 'Pinterest', so maybe some Chrome users have that activated?
It would be interesting to see of it's just Chome, if so then it can probably be traced down to extensions.

It's all part of his evil master plan to ruin your online experiance, the forty-third step in his 'World Domination Plan' to be precise.
Means I can't put Eagles in autoplay inside stories?
Man, I'm fucking getting TWO conflicting audio ads RIGHT NOW on this page right here! This is ridiculous!
2094826 Why would anyone ever want to use Internet Explorer for any reason?
2094856 Forgot about this, it's actually probably the most likely cause for most of these
I haven't had problems with this on here, but it's been happening on TVTropes a lot lately. Just choppy, infrequent audio for ads that often aren't there.
2094826
This is not a solution for anything.
2094867
I just checked on Chrome and ads played. I disabled all of my extentions (I use IE normally because I'm stuck in my ways) and they stopped. Not sure which ones exactly but it does seem to indicate that it's Chrome.
2094816
Ads are what keeps the internet free.
2094875
I don't get audio ads do I? So it's a solution to that.
I blame my dislike of Chrome on having to install and maintain it for Government workers. That can ruin anything for you.
On this page, I'm getting some. It's about red lipstick.
EDIT: I'm using Safari.
2094813
Let's be fair. You're going to get a lot more people turning to that for a solution if this isn't fixed, pronto. I've been considering it myself ever since I started getting two conflicting audio ads on EVERY PAGE I VISIT.
I'm not even joking. Every time I go to a new page I get two audio ads trying to talk over one another. At least one is usually a youtube ad, either for some sort of nerd baking channel or an ad for the channel of some girl I've heard about in the past with a bad reputation for being a serious jerk named Michelle Phan. The other tends to vary a bit more and I haven't been able to stop to understand what they're advertising yet, nor am I inclined to.
The only way I've found to circumvent this is to stop the page from loading immediately after the main content loads (which usually ends up stopping it before the ad loads in but has the side effect of making it so I can't see things like avatars and the like), or just muting my computer's volume. But since I like to listen to music that isn't the sort of thing I'm happy to do either.
This happens on every page of FiMFic. Literally all of them. I don't know if I should even bother sending Knighty anything because it's the WHOLE DAMN SITE, not just a few pages here and there.
2094876
I'm using Safari right now and I'm getting them.
I've also gotten them on Firefox and Chrome.
It's not just Chrome. It's pretty much everything. I'm surprised that IE gets away from them.
You can quit blaming Chrome.
2094810
wow dude...
Please stop reporting stuff in this thread with no information. I need the information in the blog post to diagnose this.
2094895
So let me ask you a question, do you get these ads on other sites at all? If you do (like others have indicated), and Internet Explorer (to my knowlage) doesn't, then it points towards an issue with browsers.
2094907
No. I do not. FiMFiction is the only site that's doing this to me, and it's only started recently. Like in the past week or so. And it only happens at certain hours of the night. Throughout most of the day, it doesn't give me audio ads. It's very weird.
Like right now for instance. It only started an hour ago after spending a long time on FiMFiction today.
I don't really mind audio ads. Some of them are pretty nice. I especially like the one with the car.

It seems different for every user. I just used Chrome after disabling all of my extensions and visited twenty pages. Stories, groups, this blog and the homepage.
Nothing at all.
According to other commenters this blog is also subject to the ads as well.
2094872 here also stated that they got ads on TVtropes. I wonder if they use Adsense as well?
Edit: Apparently they do, and it's caused them immense problems.
2094878
I pay for my internet service like everybody else. I think that affords me the right to skip Youtube ads and not have to hunt through tabs finding the one that has an annoying audio ad playing. If you're really so upset over it sue me.
2094933
I don't think you really understand how the internet works.
You pay your ISP. Advertisements are how all webpages make their money (well, that and selling goods). YouTube only exists because of advertisements.
Saying that paying for internet access "affords you the right" to skip ads is to not really understand how the world works. Personally I'm all for them getting around ad blocker or blocking access from people who block ads, but most sites don't bother because the population of leeches like yourself is fairly small.
2094936
*sigh*
I know how the internet works. I have a choice to have a blocker on to make my life a little bit easier, so I kindly ask you to shut the fuck up about it.
"leeches"
Yeah that's an accurate word, totally.
Now stop pulling me back here.
2094944
It is in fact the correct term, and is widely used in the computing industry.
2094944 Yeah, you have the choice to. You also have the choice to tell people to "fuck off" in comments. See how well that choice ends up working out for you.
