Anyone majoring in the classics or fluent in Greek? · 4:17pm May 9th, 2014
Alright, I know it is a little presumptuous of me to send this to all you readers, but think of it this way, the sooner I solve this the sooner the next chapter'll be written.
Anyhoo, I'm looking for someone who is fluent in Greek and can translate it phonetically into English. Preferably, ancient Greek, hence the question about the classics. I know that's a little much to ask, so contemporary Greek will be fine too. But like I said ancient would be preferable.
If any of you are fluen, and are interested in helping my story be the greatest story in the history of human in equestria halo crossovers starring Jorge (or at least the second greatest in that genre) fire a PM my way or leave a comment on the ol' comments section bellow.
The extent of my knowledge in this field:

Umm why do thou need this?

The story features Minotaurs.
Take a wild guess
(Also, that's an incorrect use of "thou", but meh)

Well the tongue he's looking for is extinct.

So is Latin, yet people still study both Latin and Ancient Greek.

He also mentioned how modern Greek was fine, too. And that's definitely not dead.
Their language (Greek) would have evolved much like equestrian did (English) from old equestrian so unless it's ancient Minotaur text I don't see why contemporary Greek would not be valid
I can't say I know Greek so I'm not gonna be any help but that's my two cents

I know neither I only know a pinch of spanish.
Why not use Google Translator? Just put in your sentence, set it for Greek, then click the "Listen" button to your heart's content and transcribe it. Sure, it gives you a bit more work to do, and it might not be 100% grammatically correct, but we won't be able to understand it anyway unless you give us the translation. Besides, I'm pretty sure that the odds of finding someone in the general populous that is fluent in ancient Greek (or modern Greek) is slim to none, let alone on this site.
Now, if you wanted Russian, then I might be able to help. I'm not totally fluent, but it's better than nothing I suppose. From what I can tell, Russian and Greek sound fairly similar phonetically, so I could probably help transcribe if you get stuck with something. Or, if you wanted, you could send me the phrases and I could put them in and do it for you.
Oh, I believe I can help.
I'd say I am pretty good, can't help you much with ancient Greek, I only know a few proverbs and the like, but I can do contemporary just fine. Be warned, I wouldn't exactly call myself a fluent speaker considering I've lived most of my life out of the country. Nevertheless, I still have a good vocabulary and a can read/write contemporary just fine.

Simply so you know, if you do indeed decide to conscript my assistance, I will be unable to respond in any substance until Tuesday afternoon - Wednesday of next week. Simply because I will be away from my computer until that time. Again, I am happy to help should you have me.
With hopes for a successful outcome

No, but oddly, kind of. I know some ancient greek. I might be able to help, but I doubt it.
I did have two years of ancient Greek in high school, but that was a long time ago. I could transcribe it from the Greek alphabet, but that's it.

That's what I thought when I used google translate for Hungarian. Imagine my surprise when I got not one, not two, but THREE people who were fluent in Hungarian telling me I was wrong. Since then I've tried to be as accurate as possible. Besides, it'll help give my story of space marines and talking ponies some scholarly credibility

I'm writing a fic with heavy Greek mythology influences, so I might need the help too.
That what I have to say about this topic. I felt Trollestia telling me to post this...
2095462 Well then, I guess I stand corrected. I have to say, the fandom never ceases to amaze me.
Hello Mr. Rainboom, while I do not have a Classical or Greek education (let's face it, I can barely understand Spanish), what I do have is the next best thing. A tumblr account. Specifically, one that had received a very lengthy collection of varied linguistic aid sites. If you wish to access the full list, use http://andlionheart.tumblr.com/post/43914782261/helpful-websites-to-learn-languages, otherwise try one of these following resources.
Greek: http://www.kypros.org/cgi-bin/lexicon *advanced translator*

Naturally, these are just some of the resources in the larger list. Your writing style is masterful and natural, while this story is an incredible gold mine of many genres and tropes that has taken my imagination by storm (which very few stories have done); if these resources can help you continue, let alone complete, this story, that would be marvelous.
