My Bible to Hero Making & The Hero's Journey for Rodney · 8:44am Feb 15th, 2014
Ah man, can't believe how long it's been since I started Shackles and Friendship. Of course, I would never had have the motivation to continue and learn to write for this fic if it wasn't for all the support (positive and negative) that I got.
Which is why I thought I'd give something back to the readers and perhaps, to future writers.
As the title suggest, I will divulge my strategy (maybe secret?) in planning the story progression for SaF. Mainly focusing on the main character's character progression, since the story actually revolves around him rather than the other way around.
If you're serious about writing, like REALLY serious, then I can't argue enough how amazing this book is. This is literally my guidebook, bible, the core of everything for Rodney's progression in the story. Spelling, grammar, all that is certainly important for sure, but even with the perfect writing; a bad story is still a bad story.
And a good story is still a good story despite all the mistakes (as I have hopefully proven with SaF).
I could write pages explaining the details and how helpful this book have been to me, and to hundreds of other writers out there. Which is why, for your benefit, I scoured the internet looking for the best comprehensive video that would do this book justice.
So here it is, enjoy.
Awesome right? To end this blog, here is the Hero's Journey for Rodney so far.
Status Quo
Rodney is just an average young adult human. Mundane, nothing special.
Call To Adventure
Without warning, he is ripped out of his world and plunged into Equestria. All ties severed.
Assistance
Though Celestia and Luna certainly helped welcome Rodney to Equestria, it's Twilight who's the "old man" that aided and trained him to prepare for this strange new world.
Departure
Rodney leaves the safety and comfort of Canterlot Castle and moves to Ponyville.
Trials
Adjusting to living with the inhabitants of Ponyville. Obtaining their trust. Learning about himself, his abilities, and dangers.
Approach
Falnor. Rodney's first extreme adversary. One that challenged him to his limits, knowledge, and mastery of his abilities.
Crisis
This is where we are at in the story. The Daughter. Jo. The other 'visitor'.
Now I can't continue with the rest, for obvious reasons. There are moments and developments in between each turning point but overall the major plot points follows this plan.
Hope this has been informative and inspires the "I want to write but have no idea where to start" readers. Trust me, I was once in your position. This is one of the critical lessons that I've learned to help you out from the get go.
Until the next chapter,
~ Zai
P.S: Here's something else that plays with the Hero's Journey. Can you point out each stage?
I thank thee, the video will help me organize my own.
Thank you so much for this!
