My intentions for fanfiction concerning technicolor miniature equines. · 4:23am May 14th, 2012
I'm dreadfully old for this fandom - 25! GASP! I have been writing for quite some time, and I go back and forth between writing reviews, blogs, poetry, comic books, science fiction, fantasy, and so on. I am dipping into fan-fiction for the first time, because it's the first fandom in which I've actually found decent writing. This is coming from a guy who rode the toonami wave of the late-nineties anime boom, with all its glory and face-palming levels of strange and immature fans. But even as a kid I knew better than to call anything out of that era of fan-writing "good." But, guess what? Ponies changed it around. Authors are actually trying to keep characters IN character. Or, most of the time, anyway. I'm rambling... to the point, I haven't really seen a good action fic yet. Most adventure fics are trying to create their own universe, too, so it's impossible to like one then try to find others similar. The mane six have a chemistry very similar to what you would see in superhero teams, and you have a cast of villains who are defeated but never die... if any of this smells like DC/Marvel to you, you're not the first to notice. I think going into my favorite DC and Marvel stories may take up too much space on your screen, and can be easily condensed down into praising two writers - Grek Pak for his run on Incredible Hulk, and Geoff Johns for pretty much everything he writes for DC.
So back to Ponies! I want to muscle in on this established base of adventure fics with something a little different. It will definitely contain common themes and elements you may have seen over and over in other fanfics (just how many times can Nightmare Moon and Discord come back?), but I can guarantee nothing will be trite about these things. It would be impossible to come up with something completely brand new if I want to use a villain who has appeared in the show; I've just entered in the fan-fiction arms race a little late and there's nothing wrong about that. And speaking of commonly occurring plots, how many times has Twilight Sparkle died or ended up in a coma? I can't even approximate a guess for the number to that. Don't worry, I'm not doing that to the poor mare.
