The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Charity Stream Wrap Up and Youtube Recording · 9:39pm Feb 9th, 2014

It only took youtube like 16 hours to process it....

edit: I've added timestamp links in the description now so you can jump to anything you want to watch easily! 720p is done too.

For those who did not attend the stream, we finished on a grand total of $6,249.52 which is simply amazing. You guys really blew my expectations out of the water. I only set a $1,000 target at first and I was worried we wouldn't even reach that, let alone over 6x more!

Someone I didn't really get to thank much during the stream was Poultron, who aided me by co-hosting the stream. Poultron did a really really amazing job of getting people to donate, something which I just couldn't have done on my own, because I feel awkward asking for money even for charity....I simply couldn't have done the work he did on keeping people going with the donations and I have no doubt he is to thank for a lot of the money that was raised.

I hope that we can maybe do a couple of these events per year if you guys are interested. I'd like to do an animal charity next because I am an animal lover at heart and it pertains nicely to Fimfiction. I would like some feedback on this event though, if you attended. I feel like overall it went really well. The readings were great ( Blueshift and Arcanium were a hilarious duo, Glimmerglaze blew me away with his narrating voice, Shelley was the most adorable Fluttershy and did a great job with embellishing, PresentPerfect made me vomit repeatedly (in a good way) and Pascoite did a great job with both of his stories which I enjoyed immensely) , the timing all worked out nicely, cards against humanity was....amazing and Griffin & Jenny gave some fantastic insight on FiW. I really don't know if people enjoyed my section, let me know?

Thank you again for everyone involved as guests, donators and everyone who watched and promoted the stream for making this a huge success.

No problem Knightyman I am glad to have participated.

ima like the video

WHAT IS THAT I HEAR? THE VOICE OF ANGELS? :scootangel:

I really enjoyed it. I could only really stay awake for the first half, but by gods was it amazing and I'm really glad I got to donate to a good cause through some awesome guys. I get the feeling that I'll end up watching the last half at some point just to catch up on the hilarity.

It was a very fun night. A time to laugh, have fun, and do something good for someone. Glad to be part of it!

If I am to be constructive, I think maybe more shorter things that include audience participation could be good. I shall have a think!

1815914 Yeah I agree, readings were pretty long.

Twas an awesome stream! You've all done the charity proud! :pinkiehappy:

One word: KNIGHTYMARE

I don't know how it will work yet.

Just wish I could have done more...

You really need to make the event of reading a fic while driving a truck around Europe a monthly thing, knighty. That was hilarious!:rainbowlaugh:

Oh, and you definitely suck at L4D2. Brits + Canadians = Bad At The Game.:trollestia:

Such a good event. Just wish I could have helped and watched the full event. I think another event would be great though, as it raised a good amount, and was a load of fun. I'll do my best to ensure I have cash to donate if you go through with it.

P.s. Still think the read and drive should be a road safety advert.

It was a good stream. Let's just all remember the message: Bullying is wrong.

Unless it's of Meeester.

Thank YOU for for doing the stream  it was really fun!
I look forward to he next one.

I especially liked the podcast character that partly took over, especially with the reading parts and the Q&A of Griffin and Jenny. I saw some people complaining that there wasn't enough happening on screen, but for me, a lover for that format, it was great and entertaining.

Sadly I still have to change my bank to get a credit card, what rendered it impossible for me to donate. Perhaps I've done that the next time you (hopefully) get such awesomeness running.

PRAISE KNIGHTY!

Yeah, thanks for a great stream, a lot of fun was had!

As for the format. I enjoyed it, I just saw the last half or so, but the rotation of fic reading, QnA, general sillyness and CaH made it all very enjoyable, and everything but stale.

I'll definitely try being around for the next one!

I think for the next event, we should take bids to allow a lucky person to hunt down Present Perfect on a secluded tropical isle. That is, if Knighty doesn't hit him with a truck first.

As for this event? I think it went pretty well, with an absence of serious technical issues (at least that I saw). I probably would just recommend having more pre-prepared questions for guests, as the chat Q&A for Jenny and Griffin sorta fell flat in places- and as Blueshift said, more audience participation. (And I'm not just saying that for the opportunity to school people at Left 4 Dead. :scootangel: )

A pity I couldn't donate more, but I had a feeling that my vet visit today was gonna ding my wallet (and it did, to the tune of $160 :raritycry: ). Still, six grand is nothing to sneeze at for a flagship effort! Excellent work!

The parts I got to watch were pretty awesome; I'm excited to go back and watch the bits I didn't see yesterday. The whole thing just makes me proud to be part of this fandom.

I feel kinda weird commenting in a place that other people can see after talking to myself in the closed IRC chat from the stream for the last twelve hours. :facehoof:

I couldn't be there for a major part of the stream, since I had to get up early, and I'm biased anyway. I can say I had a great time while I was there! I turned off during knighty's rendition of spiderses (which was great fun but my eyes had started glazing over already) and I can't really voice a complaint about anything up to that point. Except that one guy you got to play L4D2 at the last second. What a tosser.

I feel a little bad about rebuffing (... Poultron, right? I'm horrid at distinguishing voices - the entire time I never really could keep the two of you apart) for the part of Twilight. I was mentally prepared to read her parts myself in case knighty couldn't find a Twilight VA (which turned out to be the case) - and when the question was raised, the thought of not getting to do Twilight - or the narration - just didn't register. :rainbowderp: There was absolutely nothing personal about it - it was all about me! (These author types - typical!)

The reading itself was a great experience for me; Shellah was such a delight to perform with and listen to, and I didn't have notifications turned off, so the favorites and follows started popping up in the corner as I was reading. It was like I was cheered on :yay:, so there was never any chance of my spirit falling or my confidence cracking at any point. Thank you, each and every one who did that, and to everyone for their kind words about my story. It means a lot to me.

Fanfiction readings are such a natural fit for fimfiction.net streaming events, and there is no shortage of magnificent stories and gifted authors to choose from that I'd love to hear. So while I'd love to do this again - I've had my 15 minutes of spotlight, and that's just fine by me! Here's hoping for a lot more good to be done by our lovely community! Fimfiction forever!

Hang about, I thought you were quitting the site? Haven't quite managed to break free yet aye? :raritywink:

I am god, aren't I?

Shoutout to Magello for donating an enormous chunk of that $6k. You really push your generosity to the limit, man.

PresentPerfect made me vomit repeatedly (in a good way)

AT LAST MY TIME HAS COME

Man, I need to go back and listen to the stuff I missed now. :D Sounds like a good time was had for eight hours!

1816540
OH MAN FREE VACATION :D

It was fun, even your driving. And The Spiderses was the perfect choice for that!

I kinda wish I didn't miss the beginning of the stream... well at lease I can watch the recording.

gg go next

1816812
Oh and by the way, don't feel horrible. I ended up getting to read some stuff anyway! I didn't have any particular attachment to doing it, and I always defer to the author's wishes regardless. You did well, it was a great reading!

All this time I thought Poultron was a gal...

Thank you for the stream, it was so fun! I just wish I could have donated, and I wish I could have stayed 'till the end... But it was fun, and I'd love to do it again! :pinkiehappy:

PC

1818911 Oh, and next time, could it maybe not be in the middle of the night? :ajsleepy:

1818940
It was during the day for Americans. Since it was an 8 hour stream, we picked the time when the majority of our userbase would be awake.

Perhaps next time we will do a longer stream that covers more time zones. Sorry!

I'd like to do an animal charity next

If you do, I promise to drop a few bucks.

Did they ever announce who won the commission?

It was the BESTEST. The only solution is to make the next one even bestesterer.

Loved it, best evil laugh ever:twilightsmile:
