Knocking on the Name Door · 10:33pm Jan 17th, 2014
It's rather interesting how there always seems to be a profound lack of variety in names for the humans in HiE stories.
I always try to avoid falling into that pit because I absolutely adore names, and always go out of my way to ensure that the names in my stories never repeat, utilizing online lists to pick through what I want (it's easy to think of names for humans, really, just pick a letter and go shopping). The names that you end up giving your characters can influence how you end up writing them, too.
For reference, here are the names of my human characters to date (just the major characters):
-James Talbot (DYBIG)
-Manuel Mendoza (DYBIG)
-Kevin Pastor (DYBIG)
-Burt Raymond (DYBIG)
-Alan Harvey (DYBIG)
-Martin Alexandra (Tiberian Eclipse)
-Anton Viers (Tiberian Eclipse)
-Wesley (Tiberian Eclipse) - (Fun fact: see how many chapters I go without ever mentioning his first name.)
-Henry Masterson (Tiberian Eclipse)
-Jameson Harper (Final Verdict)
Finding good and unique names is actually such a trivial affair that I'm saddened that more HiE authors don't make use of it. Celestia knows how many generic four-letter teenage names I've ended up seeing in one too many HiEs.
Now that you say it....
I must say I think Talbot hits the nail on the head. It sounds like someone who would in charge of something. I might be biased thou, there was a Talbot in the game SW Republic Commando in charge of a Venator-class cruiser.
1729550 Yeah, I love coming up with names that just ooze with authority. It really makes you think when you're writing for that character.
