Isn't this just contradiction? · 4:49am Jan 16th, 2014

A few occasions I've actually talked to people who said they hated when a mane character is shipped with a background character because the background character works more as a 'self-insert' than anything else, with personality traits inserted of the writers' desire. Now, these people have claimed to like shipping, they just don't like shipping with background or otherwise little-understood characters.

I found this stupid, because isn't that what shipping is? Like... by it's very nature? I mean, we've no evidence whatsoever that anypony in Ponyville is gay, but they're gonna be shipped with each other by fans regardless, right? Maybe I'm knit-picking, but it seems silly to me to be annoyed by something as small as adding personality to a blank-character when one of the questions involved is shipping, which is by it's very nature pasting on traits of the author's desire.

Also hate when said background ponies are called self-inserts. Logic denotes that self-insert means just that; if it's pre-existing, it cannot be a self-insert of anyone other than the one who put it in there. Some people really need a thesaurus or an encyclopedia or something I guess?
