So it has finally come. I've gotten Scion of Chaos printed and I can now hold a physical copy of it. I went to my local book story, McNally Robinson, and it was entirely convenient. The cover is glossy, the paper is a high quality and ivory coloured, and it looks beautiful. If there were one thing I'd change with the next book I bring out this way, I think I'd be less conservative on the margin size on the actual pages. Though really, for my first book, I think it came out beautifully. And beyond the fact that the machine that prints the books was out of commission for a month and a bit, the whole process was very smooth, and altogether a great experience.
I know where I'm going to go to print off my next self-published book.
The resolution of the actual images is too much for the site, due to me knowing nothing about this camera's settings and a general too-lazy-to-change-the-resolution-in-an-image-editing-program attitude. So, we'll have to use screen shots for the blog. (Though I'll include high-resolution links after)

Needless to say, I've been really stoked all day, and add work into the fray... And well, I got no words written today. But I'll just have to write a lot tomorrow and the day after. That's nothing unusual. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that with you.

Looks awesome!
Do you have permission to use the picture?
Really nice.
Very, very nice!
1506766 The artist, Sameasusual did say I could use it for my story. I also credit him inside the book.
nice. id say it came out well. the cover is beautiful. you think your gonna do the same fo ahoc when you finish?
1506834 Hmm, probably... We'll see if I'll have to split it into two books or not.
1506837
Better make sure it's ok, you could get sued.
1506837 two? is there like a limit on the number of pages you can have or something?
I really like the idea of the physical copy, but I don't really like the cover. I find it kind of creepy...
Duuuuuude, that's awesome! :D
That's really nice. I'd probably have included more of the image, personally, because as it stands my brain isn't parsing what I see as Sweetie. It's your copy, of course. I can't imagine how awesome it must feel to be able to look up at your bookshelf and say to yourself "that one. I wrote that one, the entire thing, and it has been enjoyed by thousands".

Besides, as this is Silent's personal copy, isn't it kind of like printing out the picture on a home inkjet printer, only more fancy?

Better safe than sorry.
Wow that looks fansy
Sure it looks nice
1506848 The machine can only handle 800 pages in a book. Hopefully that won't be a problem... But the story is at about 400 pages worth as it stands and I'm not sure how many more pages it will take to finish it.
1506856 1507125 Well, I had 2 cropped and prepared images to pick from, and the one that I use on this site just didn't look right when I was trying to fit it into the dimensions, the other one worked a lot better. It was closer to the actual dimensions I needed, so I just had to crop out a bit of it. I suppose I could have gone to the original image, resized (though it would compromise the quality of the cover), cropped and added the text myself, but those programs aren't really my strong suit. I was sort of hoping that they wouldn't cut off as much of the bleed-room I had left on the cover, which would have revealed a bit more of Sweetie Belle... But it still turned out well, and there were no hiccups on the way.
As for the printing itself and getting permission from the artist, (even though I got it). Yeah, it's like the printing of a personal project, so it's not that big of an issue. I'm not making money on these, and platantly state it on the copyright page and no one but me can order them from the store. I printed off 10 of them for close friends and relatives.
To me, anyway, I think it looks fantastic (I realize that I am entirely biased)
1507532 i see. well either way you should do it. its something to be proud of. i only hope one day i can self publish a fic im proud of. congrats! on this and your word count for nanowrimo. i just started back up yesterday and wrote 13 pages close to finishing my 5th chapter. sucks i cant check my word count unless i counted each and every word by hand and i sure as hell am to lazy to do that lol.
First off, I wish to congratulate you ob your amazing work! It look amazing! The book looks very deatiled.
Oh nice, you finally did this!
1637770 Yeah, it was a little while back. I'm considering making a list for those who want to buy the book and have me ship it to them... I think I'll make a blog post about it tomorrow... though handling money online and shipping stuff is a bit of a headache
Seems like it, its why I did lulu, it would have been handled by them. Though I don't think you could have made your book that exact size there, so eh. 1638270
