Site Post » User Page Customisation + Favouriting Help · 1:34pm Apr 2nd, 2012
Hey guys, as some of you will have noticed I added user page customisation to the site yesterday and I think it's come out pretty nice, I'll be explaining it a bit below.
Basically you are now able to add different "modules" to your user page to show off what you want on it. You can find this in the drop down menu under your name in the toolbar at the top. If you're a reader for example, you don't need a list of your latest stories on there because you don't have any! Right now there are 5 different modules:
Module Types
Latest Stories
This is exactly what there used to be before. The only difference is that you can now choose whether to show 5, 10 or 15 stories. I'll probably add most customisability to it later!
Latest Blog Post
Pretty self explanatory. Just shows the last blog post you made on your user page.
Featured Story Gallery
Here you can make a little gallery of a selection of your stories that you think is the best you have to show off to people! You can even add a little comment below the gallery.
Favourites Gallery
Same as above but for your favourites. You can add multiple of these should you wish to show off the best 5 crossovers you've read, then the best 5 sad stories, or something like that.
Custom Box
This is a totally custom module that you can add whatever the hell you want in. Could be handy for things like leaving notes about the future of your stories, or images and the like.
Most of the modules will let you give them custom titles too so you can make it feel how you want.
Module Management
If you look at the user page editor page, you'll see there is a list of modules you have active. You can use the up and down arrow on the right to order them on the page, and the delete icon to remove them. Don't forget to save your changes when you're done otherwise they won't stick.
Next, I'd like to explain the favouring system a tad more to people who were confused by it.
The main star button on the toolbar will take you to a filter that shows only stories with unread chapters, ordered by their update date. If you click the "view all" button in the drop down it will show all your favourites ordered by when you added them to your list. This is the view that other users so of your favourites too. Don't forget you can always click the search drop down on any browse page to bring up the filters active and you can view it however the hell you like.
edit: This has now been changed so the view all button orders by update date. The favourites button on user bars above stories and such still orders by date added though.
Well... I'm making a comment.
Good stuff. I like it.
Oh, you Brits(?) with your "favouriting"!
As am I.
I guess this is pretty cool...
But i'm still royally pissed about the whole gen1 layout shit. Seriously, that had better be a prank and nothing more.
This is brilliant.
I am now perfectly happy with the changes made to the site these past few days.
Sadly, I noticed that you cannot use smileys on the comment section of the Featured Story Gallery, but I'll deal I plan on abusing that thing and telling everypony why I love certain fics.
This is good.
Still waiting for favs to be bookmarks, though.
Looks promising!
At least nopony should have anything to complain on this xD
I was disappointed with top five until I realized you could stick as many as you want on the page. Looks good! Only thing missing is the author feedback. It'd be cool if the story stats page included at least a number for how many Featured Favorites it has (maximum one per user of course) if not a list of users.
Still, looks good

Whoops, forgot to run it through the emoticons parser.
This is a great update. I can now have the stories I love/recommend all in one place again. Thanks for the compromise and adding this!
These changes are fantastic. I think ponies are going to be hard pressed to find anything to complain about with them

After that comment, I would have expected you to have more than two in use.
Is the Featured limited to 5 stories, or can I add more? Are you notified if a user adds your story to their Featured?
I think this might solve all the problems! Thank you!
You guys keep scoring...
Keep it up X3
EDIT: Wait, this is of your OWN stories? Oh well.
Are their any plans to make the "Faves Feature" a separate list accessible from the main taskbar? Like a heart icon? Cause that would solve all of my problems.

Each module may only have five, but you can have multiple Featured modules on your page (I have five).

With it having a story limit and the possiblity of having more than one, that is not the most practical thing to implement.
53696
Then i think we still need a list for stories a user loves that is separate from the list of followed stories. The modules are perfect for other viewers, but not for the users' own collection.
An excellent addition in my opinion, and for me it more or less solves the issue that the last update brought. Thanks guys

Hah, no. You obviously didn't read my comments on the thread about the new favorites system I believe a limited number is best, but I was thinking ten to twenty. Five would have just been too low. I think this is a decent compromise in that it still encourages smaller numbers, but still doesn't strictly limit them either.
That, and it lets you do things like have "Top Five Shipping," "Top Five Grimdark," etc. and have comments for each section. I'd suggested each story, but that's fine. Comments for each story probably would have gotten crowded, and a unified comments section for each five gives you the opportunity to mix things up and compare them.
I do think it would be cool to see some author feedback though, like I said. If it were me designing it, I'd have a dropdown of common lists (Top 5, Top 6-10, Top Shipping, etc.) and then summarize the numbers for each title on the story page. Custom titles would work too, and be folded together if they were identical (ignoring spaces punctuation and capitalization), and the list would be sorted by number of entries.

Curious, would (not) the ability to get a list of fics you've Liked be sufficient? Seems like a reasonable feature request.
53750
nah, the new faves is just that. I want a list of stories I "love". Not just like or want updates on.
do you think it's possible to have the favorites ordered by however you last searched them as? cause i've used update date as my listing function most of the time and i want it remain that way or simplicity
Thanks for this Knighty! I really appreciate the work you put into this site. I'm looking forward to seeing what you have planned!
Really cool. Only issue is that the images are cut down on the 'Featured Stories' and the like. Kinda messes up a number of images; focusing on just background for example.
Good one though.
Cool! I'll have fun exploring the difference, I suppose.
Great work guys! This stuff just keeps getting better xD
53757
Well, not gonna argue if that's how you feel. Not quite sure how you'd do the UI without confusing people though. Having a Like and Love that are part of entirely different systems would be a huge mess to get right. Even if you made it part of the Like system as for instance an option that pops up after you like something (like the email option on favoriting/tracking), I still have no idea how one could communicate to the user that Loving something is purely for your own categorization purposes...?
Really seems to me that it'd make more sense to only Like the stuff you really like (if you could track likes)
I... I'm sorry, I think I failed at not arguing
To the staff of EQD, and in particular whoever worked specifically on this: Thank you.
I'll admit, I was one of the dissenters - I didn't really like the new change you'd implemented. But this right here is a wonderful compromise, and this I like. Thank you for putting up with us, the civil and the not-so-civil, and yeah. Great job! Can't wait to start playing around with the new features!
This could be useful; I'll have to sift through my list to get things sorted out before giving a firmer response.
Small note, though: the search filters are NOT compatible with the Read-It-Later list! Trying to apply filters to that results in the search returning every story on the site that matches the filters. This might not be much of an issue for those who only have a few stories in their backlog, but if you have more than a page or two in your list it quickly gets awkward when trying to find what you're looking for.

I should probably take my own advice If Liking is good enough for organization, it's probably good enough for author interaction too.
Imma shut up and go write now.
I'm completely okay with this.
Im good with these changes. Thank you Knighty, i'm sure this will make things a lot easier to find when I want to find a certain fic by an author or see what they like.
Do the pictures of the stories on the favourite modules really need to be cropped?
I've said this before and I'll say it again. I love this update.
This is an update that we all* can agree on liking.

I think if we improve the page it's actually on, we could probably say that it's filtering by unread updates, or something. I agree that it's not very intuitive.
So, I was taking a look at my user page, and I noticed the block button lets you block yourself.
What happens if you click it?

I like all the modules, just one question, can you put then side by side instead of just stacking them on each top of each other? Like Say I want my "Top favorites bar" side by side with the "My Stories" bar rather than on top of each other
Oh, I like this.
Well, that does clear up a good chunk of complaints. my only question is this- does not having a favorites gallery thing mean no one can see your favorites?
I love the new Favorites Gallery module, and shall now proceed to abuse it terribly! It would be nice if a single Gallery could hold more than 5 stories, and if that was added it would be even better if you could reorder stories within a Favorites Gallery.
More than 5 would run counter to the original "Top 5 List" intention of this feature though, so I understand in advance if neither of these two features requests are implemented.
54456 No, I can see your list even without a gallery.
54456
No, there is still a list for them seprate from that.
Well done guys :) Absolutely loving the multiple favorite bar feature ^_^
Oh this is great you just solved all my problems, now I can have the links for my twentysomething favorite stories at hand right at my user page again. Now I'll use the Read Later feature as intended. Thank you.
The customisation is just perfect: Only Top 5? Pff. So I made a Top 10 with two blocks.
No complaints here, keep the good work knighty and Fimfiction Team.
This is an epic update. You took a great idea and fleshed it out and gave us so much more than anyone could have expected...
So very sweet. Totally loving these new options.
