Weekly Reading Report XI · 4:30am Mar 26th, 2013
Hi everypony!
177,002 words for the week, which is pretty short, and on Monday I read nothing for the first time this year… Oh snap! And next week is looking to be even shorter. This is my last week of work. I'll be completely free after easter, and that means I'll probably publish something then. But let's not get ahead of ourselves…
A Stitch in Time by Eakin, published like 20kw this week.
I wasn't enjoying that fic much up until now, there's not much cynicism I can take and Eakin's initial depiction of Star Swirl relied way too heavily on that. But the dude got a pretty interesting character evolution since, and I like how things are going. This is a good story that is well written in first person, but there are quite a few moments I'm pretty uncomfortable being in Twi's mind and I would personally prefer if it was third.
In Which Twilight Sparkle Attempts to Eat a Sandwich by Maphysto with all of its 8kw.
It's a fun little tale that reads like an episode. Really fun. It was kind of refreshing after having read so many epic adventure multi-parters, to be honest.
Twisting Between the Sheets by HoofBitingActionOverload its first published 14kw.
Welp! A story with a hooker who isn't a total bitch (for any established definition of bitch). This started pretty interesting. I'm not sure where it's going though, but I'm definitely curious. This is a contentious subject, but probably a bit less so considering it's same sex.
A Wake of Mist and Flame by heliopause all of its 14kw.
Have I ever mentioned I love Celestia stories? I do. What I have never mentioned, is that I hate 'guard' stories. I have my own reasons for that, and they can arguably be labeled as prejudice, but they're still my reasons and they're mine. This, however, has none of the boring boring boring cheesy cheesy cheesy martyrdom that guard stories typically have. No, quite the opposite, actually. It's full of awesome interaction, insightful observations, and pleasantly devoid of stupid fights. And it's driven by a little fun riddle that flew far far over my head until Celestia dropped very last hint.
curious to know more about your "I hate guard" story reasons. Not to argue them or anything just out of curiousity n_n
Also for twisting between the sheets...Not a total bitch of a hooker...did you read the latest chapter?
948903 On the guard thing, I ended up mentioning the gist of it anyway, which is martyrdom, there's also a bunch of other political stuff too, which has to do with propaganda, political motivations for war, and other things, but martyrdom is the tip of that same iceberg.
And on Twisting Between the Sheets... yes I did read chapter 3 before I wrote that. Emotional involvement from the prostitute is a bit of a cheesy move, but I definitely don't call being a bitch. I won't pretend to know enough about that world to judge its actual authenticity. What I was referring is to characters who get that line of work because they want to get it on; and also to characters who hate everything about it and keep complaining about whatever.
