A Small Tribute · 7:00am May 4th, 2023
So, Gordon Lightfoot died.
You might not know his name if you're not Canadian, but I'll bet solid money you've heard at least one of his songs somewhere. The most famous is probably The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (Or maybe Sundown? Sundown is so good). Look it up if you aren't familiar, it is hauntingly beautiful and one of the few songs that still gives me shivers every time I hear it. His voice is just... wow.
Was, I suppose.
As a born and raised Canadian Redneck, it feels like I've always known his music. Hell, there was a moment not even that long ago where I was looking for some songs I remembered and when I found them was the first time I realized they were his. His music just... was for a lot of my life. I never really sought it out, and to be totally honest it's not even like I was particularly a fan of his or anything. It just... it feels weird to know he died.
I've been going through his catalogue since, reminiscing about some songs I know from my childhood, finding new songs I haven't heard before. He wrote and sang some truly gorgeous songs, a lot of which are various loves songs, often tragic or bittersweet in some way. I feel the need to write Twidash listening to a lot of them. I may have a problem.
Anyway, there's no point to this blog. I guess I just felt the need to pay tribute to Gordon in my own, small way. If you're at all interested in his music, I'm putting a video at the end that talks about him a bit by the fantastic youtuber Polyphonic. Who I also recommend checking out if you have a thing for music.
Until next time,
