Mediaeval Equestria is in a time of upheaval, when Unicorn magocrats rule Canterlot and Archmage Starswirl has been succeeded by a sinister warlock named Yisrach L’ulaamun, who seeks to consolidate all magical and political power in the Capital.

Amidst it all, a gifted but overlooked young magician named Eventide Coruscate has been assigned his first position out of apprenticeship. Uncannily procuring a high-ranking position as Assistant Royal Astrologer, the stallion has been unwittingly thrust into the center of Canterlot’s darkest plots and intrigue.

In this, his diary, those turbulent episodes of his life are recorded.

Trixie Lulamoon, once a child prodigy that attended Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, is now a burnt-out occultist forced to live under the power of his old schoolmate, Twilight Sparkle, and undergo reformation for a crime against the Queen of Equestria.

Only a few months into his sentence, Trixie has been arrested for assaulting another pony at the Ponyville market. After Twilight comes to bail him out, they wrestle with their budding emotions for one another.

Strange forces are at work in the frozen north. Princess Flurry Heart has been afflicted with unnatural nightmares, and the sorcery that has precipitated them is still a mystery. Luckily, a temporary cure has been found in a potion brewed by the Princess's crystaller, Sunburst. As the newly appointed Court Wizard of The Crystal Empire, the foal's night terrors only compound his problems--especially when he has to prepare a new batch before dusk.

In the tower of a crystalline castle, a wizard broods over his relationship to a certain princess. To a stable person, it would appear as if things have been smooth sailing, but our malcontent magician fears he'll be running aground any day now if he can't put Twilight under his spell. But how? When the Helping Hooves Fundraising Fair comes to Ponyville to help the disenfranchised youth, Trixie dreams up his most sinister show yet.
