My main challenge is understanding characters well enough to predict what they would say and how they would say it. My sister's a good writer, but she has literally 100s of friends to draw inspiration from. Excuses aside, I guess I won't know until I try.
One might suppose that intelligence facilitates docility, but we have Hannibal Lecter as a fictional counter-example to that. Of course, it's a lot easier to engineer docility than intelligence, so that wouldn't really be a problem. It's interesting that Ravens and certain parrots show cognitive abilities in some ways comparable to primates, yet have a very different kind of brain anatomy. If it turns out to be more efficient than that of mammals, we might do better to use bird brains as the template for advanced AI. Food for thought.
Maybe you've already heard of her, but if you like listening to pony fiction then I'd recommend Obabscribbler. She's pretty much the best MLP fanfic reader IMHO.
And if you like the Optimalverse you should probably join the group for it.
Writing fiction really isn't something you have to learn to do, you can just do it. Granted most people's first few stories aren't so great.
I guess transraptorism could also be humans attempting to make raptors intelligent, though I imagine the consequences would be dire!
