This is not the first time I've reflected on this, but it's even harder for me to ignore right at this moment. Yes, really. I wrote a self-insert story. Deal with it (also read it, because I think it's really nice). Besides, it's like mandatory* for any decent HiE writer to do so! I had* to, eventually.
