Tragicom

E

As The Doctor and Firefly find themselves on a colony planet called Laughterra, they find the place is happy. A little too happy.

Happiness is required by law, and any and all so-called 'killjoys' are wanted criminals. It's left up to our heroes to bring an end to Madame Surprise's regime, and face off with her mysterious servant, the Kandykolt.

A ponyfication of one of the Seventh Doctor's strangest adventures.

I think Pinkie would be ticked off royally. Fun to read though.

I'm electing to ignore whatever political commentary this story was meant to have, and just focus on the moral of 'Smiling's not wrong, but it means nothing if you don't cry too'. It's essentially taking Pinkie's 'Smile' theory, and putting a twisted spin on it, which is why I cast Surprise in the role of the villain.

And with the start of this new story, I shall start reviewing each chapter. Maybe I'll retroactively review The Five Doctors as well, who knows. But, this was a good start. This review will also cover the episode itself, since I've never seen it, and this is like my first time watching/reading it.

Good choice of casting, with Firefly as Ace. I always felt that Firefly was more suited to that role than RD, even though they might as well be the same pony.:derpytongue2: Same goes for Surprise as Helen A, and the description of the propaganda posters. The concept of a 'Happiness Patrol' is really interesting, and Surprise is a perfect head for it. (I know you didn't come up with the story, but I'm gonna review that anyways.:twistnerd:)

You wrote the Seventh Doctor's manipulative moments very well. He almost beats Discord on trolling level. And Ace's personality is portrayed perfectly. (Well, as far as I know. I've only seen Remembrance of the Daleks)

And, I might be able to make some cover art for this or any of your future stories, PM me if you're interested. :raritywink:

I always had a really strong desire to do Happiness Patrol ponified, but it's pretty much the closest Doctor Who has come to being Pony, I'm not sure what I'd have done differently to be honest.

In my head, the evil leader would have been Pinkie Pie (or Pinkie P, see, CLEVER!). Though that would mean the story would revolve around Dr Whooves killing Gummy, not sure how well that would go wrong.

Also Bon-Bon would totally be the Kandypony with Lyra as her suffering assistant. I don't know if you read the novelisation by the same writer (you should, it's brilliant), but it fleshes out the Kandyman's story more. He has it that Gilbert M was really close friends with this other guy who died as a result of this bacteria they created. Gilbert was able to save his brain and fled, and only Helen A would give him sanctuary. She agreed to let him resurrect his friend as a cyborg, but on her conditions, and forced him to turn him into this horrible candy robot.

Well, I had Bon Bon and Lyra in other roles, and I couldn't use Pinkie since I want to have some sort of in-canonicity. Surprise works just as well.

Every time I see those rolled Rs, I think of Jeepie from Filmation's Ghostbusters.

I wasn't about to ignore them.

i think would work better as the titles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HE-rN6VFEc

just a suggestion

I do wish Pinkie Pie could have been here, since this would have been so personal for here. That said, your reasoning is good, Fire Fly is a quick thinker, and I love this episode!:pinkiehappy: I 'll be sure to watch it some day.

Ahh, its the world of the evil Pinkie Pies! Why didn't I realise that before now?

I've got a far better imagination for Pony names than I have, Whistle Blower works so well as does Reed Plate.

Not quite sure why Gilbert is a Donkey though.

The reiterations of the happy lines works well so far, although longer sections might work better in general it does mean the story rattles along at breakneck speed.

"Yes. But I don't need you," Patissier explained smugly. "If necessary, I'll build another one. But if something happens to me, no one else will be able fix you."

If I remember correctly from the novelisation the Kandyman was actually a cyborg, the brain of a mad scientist in the sweet robot body.

It's a shame you didn't keep the 'Look me in the eye, end my life' line I think it's one of the best ever.

I guess Surprise if going to stop smiling at the end of the story.

Because he can be a donkey, that's why. Plus, Gilbert is just so put-upon.

I blame myself for not doing that scene justice, but I think I make up for it with the final showdown with Surprise.

The bit with the death of Fifi (Gumball) always gets me, she was a murderous tyrant but she loved her dog thing / alligator.
