I find the idea of a magically conjured illusion of shadow guard to be highly unlikely. My reasoning is this. Equestria has a darker side, how dark, is dependent on the author, but it does have dark elements. Then there are the villians such as Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Sombra, etc., would not be a good idea to leave the royal compounds unguarded at night, regardless of how "real" the illusion is. They're there to protect the royal family, and any guests, diplomats, dignitaries, and so on, from whatever ill intentions the villain/ antagonist has towards the royal family and/ or its guests, or material goods. Also, magic requires mana, and it's not a good idea to have fake guards that are constantly draining your magical reserve/ pool/ power, which may lead to a situation leaving Luna drained, and therefore vulnerable to an attack, magical or otherwise. Thought, I'd point this out.
