Everypony knows about the Mane Six, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Bon Bon and Lyra, Derpy, Dr. Hooves, the Winning Pony that is Cloud Kicker, but what about the other ponies who live and work in Ponyville? What are their stories? Here are the musings of one.

Those last three paragraphs put the idea in my head of Ponyville as a sort of penal colony.

That could be a really cool story. Or a reality show for ponies? Maybe that's why all the bad stuff happens there.

Ponies pulling garbage wagons is canon, but your story is the only one I've seen so far including it.
Given a low level of technology, it seems inevitable that there would be wagons filled with produce coming in from the farms to the towns, and wagons filled with various compostable materials going back out from the towns to the farms.

I would have imagined a wagon-pony's life to be busier than you depict, since the material has to be collected and maybe even sorted (remembering our town's attempt at setting up recycling bins, and what some thoughtless people tended to put in them) but this is the small town of Ponyville, after all. Maybe everypony carries their sorted waste to a central location and dumps it into the appropriate wagons? FIM Ponies might be polite enough to do that, and it would save a lot of time and messy effort.

It's not the only time I've mentioned it, either. In Aviatrix or High Flight (can't remember which), Cherry's pulling a garbage wagon to help pay for her balloon.

I suspect that in many cases, the market ponies bring produce in and take compostable materials or whatever they've bought that day back to the farm. That would be the preferred plan, anyway. Obviously, it wouldn't always work out like that.

As for the sorting . . . it's reasonable to assume that most, if not all, earth ponies who live in town have their own little gardens, and would probably keep compost for that. Show evidence suggests that a lot of their goods come in re-usable containers, and those are probably taken back to their origin and refilled. It's easy to imagine that the miller charges for each bag, so if you can re-use the one from the last time you bought flour, you'll save some bits.

Faved and thumbed up.

And now I don my Mr Picky hat:

Paragraph 9

I doubt the spider sees such beauty in his craft, but why should she not?

he or she?

Paragraph 11

The farmponies and tradeponies are opening their shops and stalls,...

Should that be tradesponies? Or is it a question of different conventions?

Corrected the spider to 'he.'

I'm not sure why, but I like the idea of ponies referring to non-pony animals with a default gender of 'he,' but referring to ponies with a default of 'she.'

Should that be tradesponies? Or is it a question of different conventions?

I think that could go either way. I think it reads better as tradeponies, since it matches the form of farmponies.

A lovely departure from the traditional hustle and bustle story. Often I feel worked up after reading fanfics, this has me relaxed, well done.

Thanks! This was my first foray into fairly unknown background ponies.

Wait a minute...

Mostly pink? Thinks society would be better off without Cutie Marks? "Low Flight Risk?"

Quick check of publish date later...

Did you predict Starlight Glimmer years early?!

Yes. :trollestia:

That wasn’t the pony I had in mind (obviously), but there’s nothing wrong with interpreting the narrator as Starlight Glimmer. Honestly, that’s one of the great things about fiction; the reader can fit it into their mindview.

And I’ll be honest, now that you mentioned it, I could see the narrator being Starlight Glimmer. She got a second chance she might not have actually deserved.
