This is different and your normal grim world. It’s an interesting vignette of a soldier turned hitpony. It flows well, and gives an uncomfortable vibe which I assume was intentional.

That it was.
My original thinking on it was, "There's something wrong" but "The Controls are Stuck", flipping the original prompt. So this character just goes deeper into the bad decisions which started the whole story off. Whether they intended that or not is unknown, and whether it was intentional malice or unintentional apathy is not specifically stated.
It really did come down to, they are locked into this thing until the end.
