How much of the backstories where from the comics, because if the part celaeno's story about abandoning children is from the comics, that's a lot darker then what I'd expect

When it comes to Military rank I think Shining's rank in the Crystal Empire's hierarchy outstrips his Captain Rank. In the Empire he's technically Emperor and Supreme Military Commander as a result. He pretty much stopped rising in military rank in Equestria because it could never top the rank he got in the Empire, other wise he'd be a General by now.
