And you may ask yourself, 'Well, how did I get here?'

Greatly inspired by SCP-8900-EX

I feel like I'm missing something. Weren't they always in three dimensions? If they gained a dimension then all their organs would fall out through the side... And it's not like you can see in 3d, only stereo 2d..

P.S. As a human, I appreciate the use of "people" and "every/some/nobody". Finally some species inclusive language

thank god the show ended before we saw all their organs falling out

Maybe they're just magical shapes with no organs like flatland.. but that still doesn't explain their ability to turn vertically, nor the existence of donuts

SCP-8900-EX

Oh hey, I read this once! Though after reading it, the subject feels more like another SCP I forgot the number to, something about Flatland-like natives related to a South American cave.

Still, there's something much more personal about a firsthand account compared to the intriguing but ultimately scientific document that is the inspiration. It is a little tragedy to see the protagonist just... fall into it, having to be wrapped up in a self-conspiracy. It's ambiguous enough that it's hard to tell whether the painting caused an actual change (as per 8900-EX) or just opened up his perception (as per the Flatland SCP), but it terrifyingly works either way.

It does feel very open-ended, though, as if his actions afterward would just be continual self-isolation, and as much as we're seeing a culmination, we're also seeing only a beginning (if rather the beginning of the end). Following through on it would've been interesting to see, exploring how he has to live up the lie through the months if not years, whether he'll just isolate himself to the max or perhaps spill the beans on everything (or perhaps even keep it a secret between him and a marefriend, though that'd probably be too much to add).

Anyway, thank you for the good fic, str8aura!

But what really baked his noodle was the terrifying possibility that the world was always like this.
