If you skip to the end of the chapter you see that Fluttershy seems to know exactly why Dash would be getting in fights, and it's for a reason she shares with Dash: their pregnancies, and who they chose to have 'em with, and what that means for them. Fluttershy is saying, if you're confronted about this by a group of pegasi, remember these things and walk away rather than getting in a fight. I think she has a very good point.

I've been doing this stuff all this time, guys, the site just doesn't operate in a way that gives me much. Just once I kinda want to read a story where scootaloo manages to catch a fucking break. She seems to be the fandoms whipping post for tragedy. Ever story portrays her as an orphan, or a runaway, or an abused child.... and now her own mother doesn't seem to love her. It must be fucking tough to be scootaloo.
Maybe one day someone will write a story where scootaloo has an awesome family and a good home life... nah that would be fucking boring.

Flight is a tough customer, dark and negative, but she's come a long way. Scoots is exactly the sort of filly she can't help but love. Her counting the seconds before Scoots bounced back and tried mining her for information again, that was love. What she (FL) has to do is grow up to where she can ACKNOWLEDGE this love, plus it can't be easy for you when your kid has a heroworship on Rainbow Dash your co-worker whom you don't get along with.
Would this face get in trouble or be part of a dreadful out of control subplot?

That being said, I have a question I'm not sure I'm supposed to ask yet- Are we supposed to assume that neither Pinkie nor AJ/Mac might be carrying recessive pegasus genes? I feel pretty safe to assume that with AJ and Mac, but I could totally see Pinkie having recessive genes. And it can't be that uncommon if both of the Cakes had them.
Or are we using a different canon for this? I'd always assumed that this was the biology that they just didn't talk about on the show, but I guess we could be someplace else entirely by now.

Officially my headcanon on it at this moment is: if you are an earth pony you could pop out a mutation in the form of a FULL pegasus or unicorn, because your magic is sort of pent up. You are where the pegasi and unicorns come from, and worthy of respect.
If you are a unicorn or pegasus, you can breed true with your kind, but crossbreeding tends to revert back to earth poni rather than half-versions. Obvious counterexample: Scootaloo. Maybe to some extent, Fluttershy? I don't know if there's a unicorn equivalent in canon.
So, enclaves of pegasi (Cloudsdale, sky cities) and unicorns (Canterlot) contain breeding pools of the special pony types, but they try to retain a love and reverence for earth pony kind while still reinforcing their own kind. Clearly it doesn't always work in a good way. Flight Lightning would be a lot more laid back if she hadn't had a 'ground-pounding' from an earth pony stallion before being pounced by her husband/boyfriend who thought he'd give her a foal. I think he's the real jerk of the equation- clearly he left them when Scootaloo was born and had to live on the ground. I don't know if Scoots can walk on clouds either... there's a question.
So, TL;DR: (if that's you, boy did you pick the wrong ponyfiction):
The Cakes had a pegasus and a unicorn BECAUSE they are both earth ponies. Their magic was pent up and unexpressed and went into their foals. It's more common than you'd imagine and doesn't surprise the ponies in the show at all.
But if you're a unicorn, and you're with earth poni (or a pegasus, who have the process sort of split into spirit/body versions) you're definitely having an earth pony foal, because your unicorn/pegasus magic is not pent up- it's being expressed in YOU, so it has an outlet. (come to think of it, we haven't seen unicorns mate- maybe their spirit/body split has to do with unicorngasm, and they squirt magic together and rather than just spraying it forms an arc BETWEEN them...)
In both cases, it could be thought of as a magic/body split too, because wings and horns are the physical manifestations of pony magic as well as the localizations for the pegasus/unicorn breeding quirks.
That's the headcanon as it stands. It's early enough so that if folks come up with a brilliant alternate explanation, it could stick...

Pinkie's possible, but I can't see AJ/Mac having any pegasus in them - the Apples as farmers double down on the earth-pony-ness, so I can't imagine there's usually much intermarrying of the other breeds into their lines.
So, Applejinx has gone two chapters without mares doin' naughty things to other mares. I haven't read the third chapter that was put up today yet, so looking forward to seeing if she loses all self-restraint and Chapter Three is a ridiculous fuckfest.

it's a bit of a pill to swallow. Though once you finish raising an eyebrow at it and start reading, you do recognize the characters very well, I think. My biggest issue is probably AJ's portrayal in the first chapter of TMB. The attraction to Dash there looks to be mighty strong, but... it remains unexplained, at least to me, even to this day.
I think it's the subject matter, really. Probably not everyone is comfortable with, as someone put it elsewhere, "rampaging dickfillies"
Going with that, the way you've said the first TMB chapter was a throw-away/one-shot at the time and has since developped into much, much more. I think by leaving it that way, you do yourself a disservice. Right now, it seems to be more a chapter of "for the lulz" clopfic ('the gay, dashie! the gaaay!'), and could give the impression that TMB as a whole is like that... when that's the furthest thing from the truth. It might be worth reconsidering a revision of the first chapter to be more in the style of your current chapters... ie, of much, much higher quality. You could even keep the old one and post it as a separate "one shot" that it was, and have the revision in TMB's current chapter.
I think I'm just trying to spotlight some of the comments that were posted in the other fics. "I started reading this for the clop, and then discovered the amazing writing/plot". The first chapter of your first fic in this series doesn't have that hook. I think it would help you loads if it did. But that's just me.

It's just that this isn't a chore for me- it's somethin' of a guilty pleasure, as it draws on all I've learned as a writer, and I love the (show) characters so much I want to creepily follow them into their personal lives
When other folks show that they feel likewise, and even say that they're getting a lot out of it, I understand, because I got through years of hard life and a challenging and finite marriage through reading Terry Pratchett. Being able to make a world people can vacation in is a true gift, and being able to show things like mercy and moral justice even while carrying on a rousing pageturner story- there's not much better.

I ain't Vermeer, but I know I am way the hell better than '50 Shades of Gray' in just about every respect, from technical facility to imagery to balanced and responsible handling of bondage and domination topics to bring enlightenment as well as jes' prurience. The dirty little secret is that it's not hard to be kinda enlightened about stuff if you're humble and do the research and see other folks' points of view. And it doesn't mean you become stuffy and moralizing, OR that you become a yolo-crazed force of total destruction.
I get to write about subjects that I think are pretty damn deep and significant. It's just Trollestia's little joke that I ended up doing it about brightly colored My Little Ponies who sprout magical penises and fuck each other with ponyish squees of delight. (You gotta admit that's existentially hilarious. What a legacy! How much funnier could it be?)
The thing about downthumbs and moping over relative obscurity to a bunch of X Ys the Z memefics isn't that I think those shouldn't happen- it's that when I do get readers, some of them always hate it with the fire of a thousand suns but some of them LOVE it nearly as much, and seem to get a big kick out of living in a world where they can be told these particular stories. They get super attached to characters and mad at others and I bring it through to an ending in which everypony is cared for, always, and there is no true evil, just scary conflict and accomodation...
And since the subject matter cuts me off from some avenues (while being necessary to the particular stories/conflicts I want to tell stories about), it'd be nice to get the big wave of perplexed new readers for a change. I'm totally okay with a big proportion of them calling me names and poking fun at me, if it means finding more folks who will be happy and thrilled.
So, y'all downthumbers are gatekeepers- tear down that wall and let more dickfilly lovers in

Pratchett's inspired a lotta ponywriters. Device Heretic has mentioned him- it shows. There's such a thing as 'just flat out awesome'
If I can ever pull off characters half as cool as Granny Weatherwax in 'Carpe Jugulum', or write a dramatic climax as devastatingly awesome as the one in "Witches Abroad"- I only have to THINK of Baron Saturday saying no ma'am, there ain't NO way to kill a dead man, to literally get chills- well, let's just say Pratchett is revered for damn good reasons. There've been times when NOBODY has ever spun a more personal, compelling, irresistible tale.
If I gotta tell mine about dickfillies and My Little Ponies to have a little bit of that- TOTALLY WORTH IT

This bit confused for a minute, I was certain that Twi was actually wearing something to sell her filly play like a little dress or something and I had just missed it. But I guess Rarity was referring to her attitude or something... I still don't know. The phrase "putting that on" says clothes to me.
As for your readers, I for one love this series to death.
I'm hemming and hawing about writing this comment becasue I want you to know that we love the places your brain goes without putting my foot in my mouth and writing 14 rambling paragraphs about nothing. But when you tell people about this epic whirlwind romance with deep emotional connections that confront the physical aspects of a relationship along with, betrayal, crushing despair, soaring heights, and dickfillies. People are only gonna see one thing on that list. And that's sad becasue they are missing out due to their prejudice. They aren't bad people either, they've just never had the pleasure of seeing someone do this right.
Yeah.. i've enjoyed trixie's magic bit and rarity's worst day.. but this. No. I don't like. Scoots already has flying problems, don't give her a mother who half hates her for existing... don't give dash a child the same way.
i like scoots, she's so... tenacious. Once she gets flying down, she may even beat dash. What with her scootering, using her wings like crazy.
don't make scoots "a mistake", that just..i don't know. I'm conflicted. I think i could say annoyed.

And that's why a crowd of gawkers would be helpful- those who can read critically will be seduced by the lack of howling grammatical errors. As for all the subtleties- remember there is always a lot in there that you're not supposed to register consciously. In fact, in the three chapters that are out, there is already a great deal being set up, more than you're supposed to know about.
I also read mysteries, and there are parallels with mysteries in what I do- the whole trick with those is priming the reader so that they subconsciously understand who REALLY done it, but they're full of red herrings and distractions. Then when the mystery ends and they're fooled, they're delighted because on a deeper sense they understood what was happening. I've done that with the first two books to varying degrees, and I'm up to the same tricks again- already

edit: also, i still can't make it out. Is Fluttershy the biggest "stallion", then, or is Rarity? And Twilight is impressive... taking on something even AJ couldn't~ (And AJ herself for that matter!)
Only time I like Scoots being an orphan is when by like chapter 2 IF that she has a family with like rainbow dash or something. Heck anything else is better than that.

Good, 'cos Scootaloo is absolutely not an orphan. Her mom may be a single mom and not like maintaining a home on the ground, and it may be a troubled family that has Scoots acting out a lot and behaving as if she is the megacool don't-need-parents wild-kid, and has Flight not talking about her family when up in the air with pegasi co-workers and too busy to socialize at any other times- but it's totally a real family, in fact it's a lot like one (not mine) I know. To some people that stuff is going to ring very true.
I think pegasi normally have community foalsitting, like creches or nurseries.
