Strong opening. It reminded me of The Lurking Horror (a classic piece of interactive fiction where going outside the school also risks being eaten by a monster or hypothermia in the terrible blizzard).
Really wonderful start and the story is so descriptive that I was easily immersed. That said, why did she not teleport or do anything more than a few bolts? Why did she not mention having seen Trixie and talking to her? Why did she not immediately suspect a shapeshifter (changeling or otherwise)?
It was a really intense chapter, but the moment I started thinking on it the logic slowly fell apart.
11174467 You're thinking about it too much. She's in shock after finding out one of her students is dead and can't think clearly, especially when she's trying to put it together that the Trixie she ran into wasn't the real Trixie. It's actually explained in the coming chapters that she does suspect a shapeshifter but is in denial about it because (a) she doesn't have a lot of proof and (b) the only shapeshifter is Ocellus, who wouldn't harm a fly. It's also only mentioned that Starlight told Trixie she saw her, which gets written off as hypothermia by a few outside sources that didn't even interact with her.
I also thought that maybe Starlight could just teleport inside instead of running away, but that goes into my point about how she can't think clearly (hence why she blew up the door).
Real tense atmosphere. And... crunchy.

Very nice use of sensory imagery to start the story.

Still, glad you're liking the story! :)
