An interesting piece so far, very nice and narrative and I'm curious where it leads - unfortunately, I also barely made it through the first chapter, as I was basically drowning in exposition detail from the start of the chapter to the end. There's a definite advantage in setting up the stage and the character {or characters}, but it's possible to overdo it as well.
Anyway, onwards to the next chapter!

I am honestly curious: that was what I heard the Spy tell -- and I was merely a reporter... He does tend to get philosophical -- but his tale is a tragedy for a reason.

Who would have guessed? I've just cut out about 300 unnecessary words! And that's after I thought I'd cut out enough
