When she wasa filly and first sent to the Ponyville Orphanage, Anthea has been terribly shy and nervous.
She was very kind.
And she wanted everypony to know that she was not weak.
But when it came to socializing? Well, Annie was a nervous wreck.

You do quite well in showing how frightening it is to experience a world you cannot see. The degree of vulnerability within any sort of unfamiliar area is scary enough. This is only heightened by new people moving about to whom you have yet to build a solid trust with.

Annie's actions are much like I became as I lost the rest of my physical eyesight. The more I lost the more I feared. It also didn't help knowing everyone had a massive advantage over you because they could see and you could not.

I've been going blind since birth and lost it all just three years ago. I'm 39 now but, honestly, nothing makes you feel more at the mercy of the world than having no eyesight. There are tools, like I use to read and write here, which help me interact with the world. However I can't go many places by myself without feeling like a fish-out-of-water. It also doesn't help my son seeing the dirty looks people give as he helps me around in larger stores or just to go a bit faster than I normally walk with my Seeing Eye Dog.

But, back to the story, you are doing well with Annie's character from a visually-disabled perspective. I'm not familiar with the character canon you are basing the work on but I know what it is like to barely see and not see at all. It's very scary and it does take a long time before you can feel comfortable enough to not be wary of your 'limitation'.

Oh man, thanks! I'm glad to hear that I'm doing well (At least as well as I can) with that aspect of her character.
In the actual canon of what this is based off, I don't believe she ever went through this, beyond being afraid of the dark, but I think it's an interesting idea for the character.
I'll hopefully be able to keep some aspect of that throughout the other two chapters of the story, but thanks for the feedback!

Forgot to comment on this story yesterday, sorry.

Oh man, I thought you were younger than that. Not sure why it might have mattered to me.

As author has said, I'm also pretty sure that this is not a canon event that occurred in the Next-Gen verse, but maybe it was mentioned somewhere I missed? The universe mostly takes place around teenage years so I don't think it was relevant enough. Anthea actually had friends back in the orphanage, but maybe that was more along the lines of an orphan family relationship? Anyway, here's the prelude story written by the creator themselves.

Helpless

I'd say you did fairly well in showing the progression of the children's relationships. Annie is making progress but it seems that it may have more to do with being in familiar territory as opposed to confidence in herself.

So this canon does get Spike and Rarity together? How adorable! If Donkey and the Dragon on Shrek can do it, why not Rarity and Spike?

It will be interesting to see what progression you show in the next chapter. It gives me something to think on outside of my own head space as a 100% blind person.

Yeah, this has a basis is the actual canon of the universe. As well as Helpless, what with the mention of the manticore. Though I've had some changes in mind, including this story.
I put the orphanage up to that being ponies Anthea had known for pretty much her entire life y that point, sho she was comfortable with them.

Can’t wait for the new story!

Thanks! As I said, it'll be out on the 7th, which gives me time to think up an idea for the plot of the next story.
