Next, they all look human. BUT! Avians manifest ethereal wings when flying. Let's be honest, it'd take a lot of work to account for physical wings in the story, and I'm lazy. So yes, he could learn, but it would be hard.
You see, certain magic abilities, like Avian flight, Drake message-fire (permanent name pending), or Siren songs, are extremely hard to learn for beings that aren't of that race. They're... innate, if you will.
So yes, Nicholas could learn it, but it would take un ungodly amount of time.
Doesn't mean that he, as a human, has a disadvantage. You know how we are.

Well, there are two other ways to get stronger. The first is dependant on the class, so it won't come into play for a while. The second isn't exactly XP. You know in mobile games, where there's this one currency that you can exchange for a lot of other things? Yep. Extra stats, more money, or one random boon. All for the cheap price of those sweet, rare Chaos Points!
P.S.: it ain't cheap at all. And before you ask, therr is one way to get CP other than quests.

I don't plan for skill books to be a thing. He can learn certain things from books, sure, but his only way to instantly learn something is class levels. If you couldn't tell, I'm planning a slightly more realistic take on 'the Gamer'

Sorry that I didn't answer before, but I didn't notice that last comment. As you can see, that was kinda my reasoning: Nicholas, as it is, is very weak. Almost anything can destroy him without even trying, thus for now he is... I wouldn't say 'using them', but it's more like a noob joining a team in an MMO.
He gets protection and a chance to grow, and then, when he can take care of himself, he plans to split off.
Nick does understand that whatever entity is helping him is his most important ally, but until it speaks to him again, he has no idea what to do. Thus, he accepts the Apple's hospitality and takes the chance to grow, so that when he gets a concrete goal, he can get on that immediately.
I remember when I first got Skyrim. I had gotten a giant to follow me to the ruined building of your first dragon fight, and using a combination of summon flame atronarch, healing hands, and flame I leveled quite quickly.

Now, if I understand correctly what you're saying, you mean that he schould be manually training his stats instead of leveling up... and that wouldn't be wrong. The problem is Nicholas himself: he wants strenght. He may try to uphold the morals he grew up with, but he's greedy and impatient. He's basically somewhere between Lawful Neutral and Lawful Evil.
He does not want to hurt others, and will end up regretting it if he does so, but he will if he must in order to obtain what he wants. I'm trying to portray a person that would basically take the faster path to profit. I may not be doing that in the best way, but I'm writing to learn.
P.S. The whole 'training to increase stats' shtick will be completely useless relatively soon anyway, the stats will rise like crazy.
This is one solid story. Glad I managed to notice it in the new updates the other day. I look forward to future updates, you're doing well so far and the concept is quite appealing. I might even have to contribute, someday.

Well, This is it for me. Your fic has good writing and pacing. I also enjoy the concept of ponies as human and the powers of the protagonist have so much potential, but I despise your main character. He’s too submissive and weak for my taste. I don’t mean weak in power but his personality. It comes up as spineless. I would give your fic a 6/10 not bad, but your protagonist is a solid 3/10.

You'll have to wait a bit, unfortunately. I've made... a good amount of mistakes while writing this story.
I took the time to think, and this story isn't really going the way I wanted it to. I won't call this story dead, instead I'll be revising all the chapters (thank goodness it's only three) and fixing the stuff. I'll be mainly altering Nicholas's point of view, as he is... quite the little bitch. Need to fix that.

I would say to continue with the story and gradually change him, making him more courageous as he gets stronger and more familiar with his powers and the world, but, hey! I didn’t knew how to dodge until I died by falling off a cliff because I started pressing random buttons while I was suddenly attacked. I got a shield early and blocked many attacks but I still didn’t knew how to dodge at the time, I will admit, it was not my proudest moment when I did not explored all the buttons or check the tutorial.
I was playing in a friend’s house and it was my first time, he was gone and when he came back and checked how I was doing... he asked me why I was not evading the attacks. I just stared at him and yell ‘WHAT! I could do that all this time!’. The SOB still reminds me to this day about that.
Bear with me, those two moments were at the same time I fell down the cliff, after I died, he asked me that. I still got a good reflex by dying and shielding myself a lot in that game.
