I think she suddenly knew she only had a limited time left and kept herself going to see her granddaughter lead the Wonderbolts out.
I don't believe she wanted to let on that it was her last day lest it spoil the grand family occasion.
At the end she was with her family, and in the final reckoning there's nothing more important.
this definately brought a tear to my eye, i would have thought Celestia and Luna make an appearance and perhaps more mentions of other wonderbolts, CMC or Lightning Dust

I mentioned a couple of the Wonderbolts from the series, but this is set two generations hence, when pretty much all of Rainbow's peers had passed on.
It would have become a little lonely for her had she not been able to relive her past glories through her family line, but what a great family to spend her last day with!
Absolutely beautiful. One thing I would have liked to see was Lightning Dash performing the Sonic Rainboom, just once to give her mother one last gift.

I intentionally left the sonic rainboom as Rainbow's personal domain so it added to the mystique surrounding her legend, but the door is open at some time in the future for one of her descendants to replicate it and reinvigorate her memory.

I have a feeling Twilight would give up her immortality to bless herself and her friends with long life..? Maybe she can do that with Princess Celestia’s help?
Even if Twilight is dead. There are three other immortal princesses, Spike the dragon is basically immortal and Discord is as well.
And the sonic rainboom has been performed at official spectacles such as a royal wedding for example, there is no way there are no images in the newspapers in the archives of the wonderbolts, at the palaces and in twilights library at least.

I mentioned that Rainbow had outlived the other Element Bearers “in an ironic and unexpected twist of fate”, but didn’t go into details. Twilight may have sacrificed herself for the good of others or she had the gift taken from her in some kind of magic duel. What mattered was that although her closest friends had all passed, Rainbow was still loved by her close-knit family.
Short and moving. Fitting that she found more to life beyond mere stunts. Your line about how she wanted for nothing, and then wanted nothing more than for him to return was especially touching. A beautiful look at family, heritage, the young, and the old.
