That's all well and good, so long as someone is paying attention to the world at large. Rote training like this provides a canny enemy instinctive levers to abuse if the army isn't willing to adapt.
Transmutation works well for this, get a rock and focus on turning it from one material to another and back again. lead/gold is always a classic. Another good option is to get a gemstone and channel your excess energy into it whenever possible. This has the added benefits of training fine control, and gives you a secondary source of power for emergency use.
One trick that works well on nearly anything is to create a shield-globe around their head/airways and siphon the air out. 'tis hard to fight if you cannot breathe, yes? Or, if you're feeling extra vicious you can teleport something in, like noxious gases of various kinds.
No, no, not the legs, the wings. Get ahold of one of their wings and haul it off to the side in a random direction. Works most of the time and doesn't take nearly as much energy.
To Sergeant Bluebelle, does the EUP allow non-ponish elements to enlist, such as donkeys or griffons? If so, do they have their own particular talents like the three tribes do?
Excersize, repetition, exersize, repetitin, because more than 90% of the stuff teh Guard gets to face remains pretty much constant over the millenia.
For the Inconstant Moon though, theres Special Forces.
I mean, the magic resist here makes me figure the usual d&d workaround: Summoned/created stuff that's not explicitly magic.
She already made steam very quickly, all she has to do on top of that is heat it up more and point it somewhere vulnerable. Unless the heat is somehow explicitly magical and drains off, that's a nasty surprise. (Also not something to pull out in sparring, of course) The usual adventurer mainstay is dropping acid on things.
Separately, but would the magic grounding also allow deconstruction of active effects? Obviously it's not always going to be a good idea, but could a trained earth pony try and ground the power out of a shield or upkept effect?
I just had a moment of I wanna read this but so many stories have been updated recently I'm a little burnt out you know
9519215
I get that.
9519298
Thanks I will probably read it after a good night's rest. Btw why did you change the story rating from T to M
9519305 There's a blog explaining it. Basically, there's elements that can only be portrayed during M rated situations that I don't believe I'd like to leave to a companion "the rude bits" story.
9519322
That makes sense and I'll give the blog a look at

My own thought would be to use dark magic to corrupt the ground to the point where earth ponies can't interact with it without hurting themselves. Or does the Guard frown on that sort of thing?
9519826
Depends on residue and whether it's actively corruptive, abusably corruptive, or just hella dangerous.
I would guess they frown upon it for all three, though.
9519826
9519850 The biggest issue against using dark magic is that Lyra doesn't know it because Twilight didn't know it in S2.
This was a nice chapter about the training in the guard. I suspect Lyra's going to need all that knowledge about magic for a special purpose but I have no idea what that will be.
I just want to say that when this updates, I tend to have a very enjoyable lunch hour. It's refreshingly relaxed, lighthearted, and just plain fun to read. Thank you for writing this.
9520418 I'm glad I can provide something nice to read.
Lyra would you go back to being a male if it meant you might loose sweetie (It's not a guarantee you would loose her just a chance)
9519858
Is that a "It's dangerous and regulated but not inherently corruptive", "it's dangerous and corruptive enough that Sunbutt restricts it to alicorns (and prospects)", or "Tee hee, I have no plans to do anything with it but feel like giving a mysterious partial answer"?
9521109 It's a "Celestia didn't teach it in her class."
You know, I always kind of wondered if you could ground pegasi if a unicorn or another magic user created a void of air around their wings. You would think their wings would require airflow to operate so if the space their wings operated in was a vacuum then they wouldn't be able to fly or use their magic. As far as I can recall I've never seen it brought up. Maintaining it would probably be the downfall of it unless the spell was self adjusting to where the target moved.
Good chapter Damaged, looking forward to seeing how Lyra handles the separation with Sweetie. Ice cream and chocolate, can excuse it for needing sugar for magic.
9523560 That would work, but there is a LOT of mass you'd have to hold back. At ground level there is 1atm of pressure. This is a kilogram per square centimeter.
Let's say you want to make a 1m radius sphere that holds out all the air. That's 12.5 (roughly) square meters of surface area, or 125,000 square centimeters. 125 metric tonnes, or 137 US tons, you need to hold back with your bubble. Lyra's strong with hers, but she's not that strong.
9523569
Very true. Far too many other spells to cast that are more efficient. I always like to think outside the box. Usually boxes have cats in them. Whimsy of magic and the combinations. Probably why I would make a terrible magic caster if I just dropped into it with a blank check. Explode from back lash or trying to wing it.
Don't teleport blind in the woods or you're gonna have a bad time.
9523577 That's not to say sucking all the air out wouldn't work, but it would need more heft to pull it off.
this story is developing in to a super story fast and it is looking so good.
So, miss Drops... what is the plan to keep this wonderful relationship of yours together? For, while absence makes the heart grow fonder, love unattended grows... bitter. So, miss Drops - the mare with the plan - what is the plan?
Been re-reading too much. Getting Rarity-bug vibes “Chirping is what changelings do, darling.”

That spell Precise interrupted.... The Want It Need It spell?
Interesting worldbuilding about magic generation. Wonder how that will impact Joyce's knowledge? Wait, is that why some ponies apparently can't have diabetes?
Trust the human to get creative! 😇

In would be interesting to see how the techlings would react to this universe, as magic here is inherently disruptive to electronics. Perhaps it might speed up adaptation thereof if living beings could intelligently relate how things are breaking.... 🤔
