Not a bad story. The whole time slip maneuver was an interesting choice.

Mind putting that in a spoiler tag?

I'm confused, what was with the time travel?

It simply is. Hence the mystery tag. Not everything in a story needs to be explained, nor do all plot threads need to be resolved if the main plot thread reaches its conclusion.

Looking into the kitchen from the living room, Hugh watched as the two women went about the business of cooking, and smiled, but that quickly faded.

Why didn't you tell her? Bill asked, his ghastly visage clear as day standing between Hugh and the Kitchen.

Why didn't you tell her that I blamed myself for Lieutenant Miller? A red hole appeared on his chest.

Why didn't you tell her that I shot myself rather than freeze because I couldn't handle the guilt? His chest was now covered in blood.

You knew I should have been rotated out when I made that mistake in OR earlier that week, that I couldn't deal with losing that boy barely old enough to wear a uniform because I fucked up. You knew I couldn't hack it. I told you I couldn't hack it! Why didn't you say something?! Bill silently screamed.

"I'm sorry," Hugh said weakly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Hugh," A feminine voice said from behind him, snapping him out of the haze he was caught in. There was his wife, wearing a smile and a concerned look in her eyes. "It's ok," She told him, reaching up and putting a hand on his cheek, which he leaned into and joined her hand with his. "It's ok,"

This exchange hits close to home for me. My dad served 3 combat tours in Iraq. He told this story once of a young guy, about like the one Bill was referring to. It was a short exchange. They were in Field Artillery. The guy was in Charlie Battery, my dad was in Alpha. He had left his tank just long enough to take a leak and run back to the tank.

Just as he was on his way back, a terrible sandstorm rolled in. It was so dark, my dad said he couldn't see his hand in front of his face. The grains of sand felt like tiny needles pelting you rapidly.

The younger guy somehow made it back to formation, except he was in the wrong section. He had found my dad's M-109 in Alpha Battery. He still knocked anyway.

My dad looks out to see the guy and he lets him in. The guy's first question was: "Is this Charlie Battery?"

My dad shook his head and said: "No, you're in Alpha. Charlie is about half a klik in the opposite direction. How did you get this far and why were you out in that storm?"

The younger dude was like: "I just had to piss. The storm rolled in on my way back."

My dad let him stay until the sandstorm had subsided. Before the younger guy left, my dad asked him if he wanted him to let Charlie know that he was safe.

The guy declined, fearing he would get in trouble and he left. He made it back to Charlie safely. My dad never saw him again.

He had found that 2 weeks later, while they were trying to liberate Kuwait from Iraq's invasion, a torrential downpour caused the streets to flood. The water was so strong, it picked the tank up like a bath toy and it floated toward this ravine and the tank fell 20 feet. All the 100 pound shells and .50 caliber rounds had crushed the crew. No one survived.

That little exchange between Hugh and Bill reminded me of that story. That was well written! You definitely earned a like and favorite.

Thank you and you're welcome. Thank your dad for his service for me.

I'm sorry you're offended by the comparison. I was in love with that recording when it came out in the 60s and think of it every time a nice dead person helps a living person in distress.

Large Marge was probably based on it as well.

I just don't like country music.

Sounds like the doc suffers from Survivors Guilt.

9210892
I wasn't asking you or anyone else to like country music. I was pointing out a thematic connection.

Otherwise known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). ;)

That was beautiful. I like old country songs cuz they always have good stories to tell.

Wow, that was a spin that I don't see often get used. And seeing it here, of all places, served to add a little spice to the story; make it more heartwarming. Very well done.

Yea and no. Yes time travel, and since this is a one shot, that's as far as it goes.
