It's True

Author's Note:

I haven't bothered to get this completed until now, so excuse the fact that the description says ''from the newest episode''. That was when I originally wrote it but had a serious case of writer's block. It wasn't a fun trip, to say the least.

When I watched the episode for the first time, I couldn't help but wonder if that little argument between Twilight, Starlight and Ember could have gone a little further, so I decided to write this short scene extension!

Anyway, on a side note, before you read this, any and all negative comments that are not constructive criticism will be deleted.

Other than that, enjoy the story!

========================

With love, from England,

- FireRain 💛

''All I'm saying is that you both look the same!'' Ember said as she threw her blue-scaled claws up in frustration. The two mares, Twilight Sparkle and Starlight Glimmer, stared daggers at the dragon, their stares of steel burrowing through Ember's orange eyes.

''We both look the same?'' Starlight began. ''Are you serious? Me and Twilight look nothing alike!'' She protested, motioning a hoof towards the alicorn Princess of Friendship and then to herself. ''We don't even sound the same!''

''Yes, you do!'' Ember facepalmed, stating her facts like they were supposed to be obvious. Apparently, they were not, resulting in this heated debate about who looks like who. ''Not only that, but your names sound even more similar!''

''No, they don't!'' The two frustrated mares said in unison.

An unamused and annoyed expression crossed the dragon's features. ''Are you two blind or something? Have you ever even taken a moment to look at each other's features?'' She asked, moving forward and taking a hold of Twilight's cheeks, turning her head to face Starlight. ''Look! You're both purple, you both have horns, and you are both friends!''

''E-Ember! Let go!'' Twilight said, pulling herself out of the dragon's tight hold. She gave her cheeks a rub from the rough contact and she continued to glare at her. ''Well, fine, yes, we both have horns, and I was originally an ordinary unicorn, but we still look nothing alike! And we definitely do not sound the same!''

''Yeah!'' Starlight said in agreement. ''Granted, 'Starlight' and 'Twilight' do rhyme, but that doesn't have any connection with our personal traits or inheritance. For one, I don't see how you can mix the two of us up. Twilight has wings,'' She said, pointing to the other unicorn's large, feathered appendages. ''See? Alicorn, unicorn. Entirely different species.''

''Starlight, I- Huh, well, I suppose that makes a bit more sense,'' Ember said, lightly scratching her chin as she thought it over. ''But still, you have to admit that you both have some similar attributes! I mean, you even act the same as each other!''

The two mares facehoofed.

''Seriously?'' They responded simultaneously.

''There it is again!'' Ember held her claws out, frantically swatting between the two, causing them to look at each other. ''You both reacted exactly the same! How can you not see this for yourselves?'' She asked, looking between them with a frustrated frown of annoyance. ''Heck, the two of you are even probably into the same hobbies, too.'' At that, they both blinked.

''Well, no, not really,'' Twilight said. ''I mean, I'm into antiquing and researching things like chemistry, physics and astronomy, but Starlight isn't.'' She said, turning to face Starlight with a soft smile. Starlight nodded.

''It's true, Ember. While me and Twilight do share some of the same interests, we don't like exactly the same things or activities. However, we do both like scientific research and trying out new spells and such.''

''See what I mean?'' Ember asked, to which both ponies in front of her gave her a blank expression. ''Some of the things you like are eerily similar. Speaking of things that are similar, have you two even looked at your cutie marks recently?'' Ember asked, moving forward and motioning towards both Twilight's and Starlight's cutie marks. ''You both have cutie marks with sparkly things on them!''

Twilight and Starlight shared a confused yet annoyed glance before Starlight said, ''Well, actually, mine is more of a glimmer.'' At that, Ember let out a frustrated groan and face-palmed.

''How is that different?'' Ember inquired, but turned her head as she noticed a figure approaching from her left, eventually seeing that it was Spike. ''Oh, Spike! Can you please tell these two that I'm right? They both look very similar.''

Spike turned to face both Twilight and Starlight, both of whom were giving Ember a disapproving scowl. Nervously, Spike began to scratch the back of his scaly claw and he glanced from both ponies behind him to the tall, blue-scaled dragon in front of him.

''Well, you know what friends normally do? They let something go when it's upsetting somepony else,'' Spike said, but this only seemed to infuriate the dragon princess even more, as emphasized by her scowl and crossed arms as she glared down at the little purple and green dragon.

''But I'm right! Come on, Spike, look at them! You're going to tell me that you have never noticed any similarities in their appearances and personalities?'' Ember protested, taking a hold of Spike by the shoulders and turning him on the spot to face both Twilight and Starlight. They both stared back at him for a moment before looking up towards Ember.

''Well, I suppose if Ember doesn't see that we don't look alike, then maybe Spike will,'' Starlight said to Twilight, seeing her give a nod of approval before she turned back to face Spike. ''Right, Spike?'' She asked as she looked down to the dragon, as did Twilight. Spike could already feel the bullets of cold sweat forming on his scaly forehead as he looked back and forth between the two ponies. He continued to nervously scratch the back of his claws as his soul was stared into by the two mares in front of him, and he knew that they wanted an answer sooner rather than later.

''I, well,'' He began. ''I'm...I'm not really all that sure, actually,'' He said. ''I guess they have similar names and mane colours?'' He said with a small shrug. Both Starlight and Twilight groaned, face-hoofing in unison.

''Not this again...'' Starlight grumbled.

''See!'' Ember said in triumph. ''I told you that you both had similar names and mane colours! I wouldn't be surprised if you were both sisters, too!'' She said, and both mares and Spike froze in place as they stared at the blue dragon in shock and surprise. Yes, it may have been true that Twilight and Starlight had names that sounded almost exactly the same, mane colours that were almost identical and cutie marks that held almost exact meanings and symbolism, but sisters? Nopony had ever even thought of that, and the idea to both Twilight's and Starlight's ears, now that it had been said, sounded just...absurd!

''For the last time - we look nothing alike!'' Twilight eventually said, breaking the silence. ''Yes, we are both friends, we have quite a lot in common, our names rhyme and we both have horns, but there's nothing else that's noteworthy about us aside from those few things! Also, not that I would mind it if she were my sister, I can assure you that we are most definitely not sisters, so just drop it already!'' Twilight said, snapping as she came face to face with Spike. ''And you,'' She said, lightly tapping Spike on the tip of his nose. ''You, don't enable her! I get that she's pretty much only just met us both, but she should still be able to tell us apart. I mean, Starlight hasn't got any wings,'' She said, pointing to Starlight's side, only adorned by a bright hue of lavender hair that served as her coat. ''And I have,'' Twilight then pointed to her sides, showing that she indeed had a set of larger-than-average wings, which was typical for an alicorn. ''You see? It's not that difficult!'' Twilight finished, looking back up to Ember. ''Do you get it now?''

Ember only looked at both of the mares for a moment, as if her brain was trying to calculate and take in all of this new information that was brought to her attention. She looked between the two for a moment or two, and both Starlight and Twilight waited in a silent suspense to know if Ember truly understood the point they were trying to get across to her. Eventually, Ember spoke up.

''No,'' She said. ''Not really.'' At that, Twilight and Starlight groaned heavily and they both face-hoofed with a loud smacking sound to their foreheads.

They might be similar in few ways, but they differ in multiple others.

They both can't get a stallion.

They don't need one. They have each other.

Man, if Ember ever met Amethyst Star and Sea Swirl...

Sure, Starlight's a dark-mirror expy of Twilight, but no more so than Sunset Shimmer or Trixie or Moon Dancer or Tempest Shadow. And Sci-Twi probably tops that category. But I guess Starlight's the only one Ember knows about, and her color palette is vaguely similar to Twilight's...

(...and she has an introverted personality, lives in the same castle, and is similarly epically overpowered, and tends to reach for dangerous forbidden magic as a first solution, and has a light stripe in her hair and darker hair than coat color, and studies magic as a hobby, and has cast time-travel spells successfully, and has mind-controlled ponies on a whim and pulled cutie marks off other ponies, and her dad has a two-syllable name ending in "light", and her own full name is four syllables in trochaic tetrameter comprising two words each of two syllables, and she went most of her life before learning about friendship as an adult...)

...but that doesn't mean they're alike!

They could be related.

Remember Pinkie Pie and Applejack.

Looking back, I think Twilight and Starlights father are the exact same shade of purple. And have the exact same interests......

Ha! :rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh:

So true. Although, you have to wonder on why. I mean, when Twilight became an alicorn and a princess, wouldn't you naturally assume that all the stallions come knocking on her door?

8942824
Like they do with Celestia and Luna? :pinkiecrazy:

8942824
When you have her overprotective brother, the princesses, her best friends, her parents, Spike and Owlowisicious.

I may have not seen this episode, but there are times when people are alike - yet aren't relatives.

It all comes down to exposure - that is probably what they should've told Ember: that while yes, they are similar in many traits, they are also different in many others.

Of course, this being comedy written by regularish writers, it'll in all likelihood drop flat.:pinkiecrazy::trollestia:

Still, it was interesting to read. Thumbs-up for characterization, and the fav for it being well-written.

8942824
A lot of fic writes this off as "Ponies have been trying to snuggle/suck up to Twilight ever since Celestia claimed her as a student, and Twilight's either learned not to trust any kind of intense romantic/friendship approach from near-strangers, particularly ones in Canterlot, or is just that intensely oblivious to it all."

8944375
Ah, the pressures of fame that come with royalty. Imagine being so famous that you can't even walk out of your front door without someone recognizing you straight away and asking for either a photo or an autograph! Being a celebrity, whether some people may like it or not, always has its drawbacks. Come to think of it, some certain celebrities in the real world have actually gone as far to call it quits due to their fame and take their own lives because of it. It's sad and unfortunate, but it's also a true and horrible fact. :ajsleepy:

8944882
Yup. Given the show's first episode, I rather imagine Twilight kind of dodged a lot of that by mostly staying indoors for much of her life and not socializing, and most Canterlotians thus not really knowing what she looked like. Possibly to the point of not remembering that Celestia had a student at all, or at least remembering it only as a distant fact rather than something that might apply to the unfashionable purple pony trotting past them with her nose in a book. If anything, their attention might even sometimes be further yanked away from her and towards the baby dragon on her back.

I’m not sure that technically speaking, unicorns and alicorns are separate species. After all, Shining armer and cadance had flurry, and one of the most widely accepted definitions of species refers to organisms that have been separated so that they can no longer produce viable fertile offspring.

8949341
Don't forget the Cakes. Two Earth Ponies with a Pegasus and a unicorn as offspring.

MJP

8942720
FireLight is three sylables

8949431
...not in any pronunciation I've run across. Unless you're stretching "fire" out to "fi-yah"...?

This makes me want to find a fanfiction where they find out they are actually sisters.

MJP

8949897
i'll check the dictionary

yeah you're right, fire is one syllable

this has been, MJP vs. Grammar

''But still, you have to admit that you both have some similar attributes! I mean, you even act the same as each other!''
The two mares facehoofed.
''Seriously?'' They responded simultaneously.
''There it is again!''

*enter chapter-name here*

Needs a chapter where Ember informs them she can't tell the difference between Luna, Rarity, or Granny Smith. :rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh:

unicorns, check
purple fur, check
darker purple mane with two different colored streaks in it, check
special talent is magic, check
socially awkward, check
tend to use magic to solve problems, check
had to learn lessons on friendship, check

8990973
No, but Shining Armor & Vinyl Scratch look a lot alike.

9044806
I was referring to the fact that those three characters all are played by the same voice actor.

8941490
Ha! Badum-tsst! (Still, does nopony fancy a princess or an admittably adorable unicorn?)

9253913
Remember when the CMC were finding their special somebody during that fiasco of Big Mac and Sugar Belle?

9254120
I do, but it was all a misunderstanding. Even still, I have no clue how old they are. Attend most, I'd guess either thirteen or fourteen. I wouldn't say they were deep into their teen years. Kinds makes me wonder a little, really.

9254130
Might be where Spike's age is,

8950080
Well then make it Gyro & MJP vs Grammar because fire is two syllables...

Fye-yer or Fye-yar or Fye-ah.

At the bottom, under Pronunciation.

Still, good analysis by Geminii.

And that's the story on how pony's discovered that dragons are naturally nearsighted and colourblind, and likely have thermal vision anyway so most pony's would look the same regardless. not much heat to see in a horn or feathers....

Actually, that would explain a lot now that I think about it more deeply. Thermal vision would be a very probable evolutionary trait of dragon's, especially seeing as many reptiles possess it without having the innate affinity for fire dragons do. Would also explain, there sociality, the bigger the hotter the dragon the more it stands out it them. Celestia would be a literal inferno to them, and her size would make her recognisable to them as well.

some one should work on this concept. I'll have to think on it more.

9469931

I dont think thats true in canon, but its completely fascinating. Please tell me more. That is a really good idea for a fic about the dragons of MLP. Now im imagining your scenario in connection to how dragons literally bathe in lava.

Im hooked on your idea now.:pinkiehappy:

From that day forward, Twilight wore her crown until the end of the series.

8942736
NightLight is Light blue with darker blue hair, Firelight is dark purple with teal hair, how exactly do they look similar?

9678502
No. I mean Twilight herself and Firelight are pretty much the exact same shade of purple.

So, Ember can't tell between Fluttershy, Applejack, and Pinkie Pie. It's not just a Twi/Star thing.

Embers just racist. :pinkiecrazy:

It's kind of like how certain etchnic groups see the differences in their own community but find it hard to see in others. It's mostly based on who your raised around, the differences stand out to you because you brain is trained to look for them.
In MLP there is a very dominant body type, some ponies really stand out like Bulk Biceps or Trouble Shoes. But dragons tend to be much more varried in body types. Ember really doesn't know the ponies well so she has yet to adjust to paying attention to things other than proportions to quickly recognize ponies., And dragon stubbornness prevents her from admitting it. Admittedly a pretty long explanation for why the joke makes sense
