This story is a sequel to The Freeport Venture

Young Kukri Doo faces the greatest crisis of her young life. Worse than the time her ship was chased by pirates. Worse than the time the Equestrian Intelligence Service took her prisoner. Even worse than the time a Primal Changeling tried to turn her into its next meal.

It's Sunset Shimmer's birthday!!! And despite being the Shimmer-mare's personal apprentice, Kukri doesn't have the first clue where to get the perfect gift for her or what that gift even is! Her parents and friends simply fail to grasp the gravity of this unfolding crisis, or the terrible consequences of failure. Who can imagine what horrors might be unleashed if Kukri can't find the perfect present before time runs out?!

This was a lovely piece.

D'aaaww.

Cutest. Changeling. Ever.

That was cute... nice... it made me smile, made me happy to see it.
Just one teensy, tiny little problem:
WHO TRUSTS A GIFT THAT A SPY HAS TOUCHED! There's bad ideas, then there's that (or trusting a diplomat's gift, or a gift from pretty much anybody for that matter).
If you have any doubts, I reference you to this.
Good story though, have an up vote.

Edit:
Did Shimmy just get a whole lot more politically intelligent from the last story? Or just more intelligent in general? I'm actually starting to think she has a chance of not being a total idiot the next time she runs into something.

I did wonder if Celestia kept in contact with Sunset after they split up aside from having spies following her around all the time

8028434 Yep. Last chapter for the original Freeport Venture, she met up with Sunset and they talked out their problems. The two agreed that Sunset would stay in Freeport, free from Celestia trying to force her return, so that Sunset could 'find herself' and learn to solve her problems.

This one’s chest swelled with pride at the approval in her voice, especially since it had not been tripped up by the trick question. The shimmer-mare frequently tested this one to see if it truly was absorbing the lessons it received. The actual lessons, not the chores.

Yes. Tests, That is what those are. Well spotted.

The feels are strong with this one...

So ends another day in Freeport. One like any other... and yet, not.

With a direct line to Celestia and another year older, what's next for Magus Sunset Shimmer? Perhaps an honorable return to Canterlot is sooner than she thought... if only she could remove the last of her arrogance.

But that, is a story for another day.

Given how dark Freeport Venture stories can get, it's nice to have something a little more light-hearted like this now and again. No necromancers or evil warlocks, no political intrigue biting anyone in the arse, just Kukri trying to do something nice for Sunset's birthday.

In short, absolutely adorable :yay:

How hard could that be?

And Kukri tempts Murphy ...

and besides, this one would probably just get the thing stuck in its leg-holes. Again.

:rainbowlaugh:

Dinky and Kukri need to get together and conquer Equestria with the power of their combined cuteness

This was adorabibble! Kukri is so cute. I also liked how Puzzle clearly likes cake enough to need to use all his subtle skills to fend off Heartstrings. To summarise, 10 out of 10, would do again.

Unfortunately, this is technically years before the cannon of the show so...

Fun stuff as always with the Freeport Venture series. Poor Kukri really made everything harder than it needed to be.

8029090 I don't know about that, it definitely seemed like a bit of foreshadowing with the way Goldtalon reacted to kurkri

There should be a story where Kukri gains too much love, and takes over Freeport! <3

Seriously though this was a GREAT story, one that was worth the read! Kukri really is just too cute for her own good! <3

8029068
Celestia hoofing over that journal is most likely for the same reasons EqG Sunset has her book- to make sure she doesn't lose touch with the right kind of "friends", and possibly to tug on a few homesick heartstrings for good measure if it'll eventually get her back home.

Because, y'know. Powerful unicorn magus friend with a few decades of Freeport seasoning would totally not be worth it to Her Royal Long-Game-Player.

Has it been discussed what Kukri parentage actually is? Is she a pure changling adopted by her 'parents' or a half pony hybrid or can free changelings reproduce asexually so her father is her only parent?

I haven't read the Freeport stories, but this was adorable.

8028438

All of which has nothing to do with whether or not Celestia is still keeping an open dialogue with Sunset aside from the spies she has reporting back to her about Sunset's actions.

Admittedly, we don't know how long Sunset has been in Freeport, but as she was freaking out over being replaced when Fleur told her about Celestia looking for a new student, it alludes to Celestia basically not even sending Sunset a letter from the time they split telling her anything for what had to have been a few months.

This one really liked this story. Wonderful use of text phrasing to shift emotions.

8029286 Yeah, Kukri is probably in her late twenties or so when Twilight ascends ...

But my headcannon still insists that she is just as adorable as when she was a grub!

Kukri is adorable. and this was a nice story. it brought a smile on my face when I needed it. Nice work!

LOVE the Freeport stories

8030358

We haven't really discussed the details in a story yet, but long story short, Knives and Codex are her biological parents. Siring and carrying is worked out ahead of time and dependent on the non-Free Mind's biology (Knives is a mare, so she was physically capable of bearing Kukri and Kunai), but a union between a Free Mind and non-Free Mind will always produce a Free Mind grub.

Which Kukri is not; she is almost 12 years old, which is not a grub.

Ah, nothing like a last minute birthday gift rush. Now Sunset just has to keep Kukri from panicking over a gift for the entire next year. At least she'll (probably) have enough time to find a gift.

Glad a present from Celestia showed up. Things are still awkward but as long as Sunset's not on the run (at the moment), at least they stay in contact somewhat.

This was a lovely and heart warming story. :pinkiehappy:

A fun little read. Well, not little but... you know what I mean. Was still a good read anyway

That color scheme... definitely not the same. Nope :rainbowlaugh:

I half-expected the kid Kukri fought over the book to be in the party just to make things more awkward. Oh how glad I was when that didn't happen.

And little Kukri learned a lesson - her parents were not wrong when they said it's gonna be fine and not to over-react.

So, Sunset has gotten her journal now, and it made her happy. Kukri's gift made her happy as well. At least for a little while, all was right in the world.
Fleeting, but heartwarming

YAY for Freeport

I was - still half am - expecting that unicorm to be a young Spoiled... whatever her maiden name was or something...

8041928 Milk. Her maiden name was Spoiled Milk

8043407 I thought it was, but I could not qutie remember if that was canon or fanon, and, as is becoming way to true at the moment, it was too late and I too mentally drained to actually go check.

Adorable. Just Adorable

As you may have noticed, I'm playing catch-up with your work. This was an especially lovely piece. Nice to know that Sunset's time in Freeport wasn't all magical mayhem and political posturing. Granted, there was still a fair bit of the latter here, but leave it to a Doo filly to bring some sincere, heartfelt sweetness to the situation.

Also, I love how haggling is essential information taught at an early age in this society.

Lovely stuff. I regret not reading it earlier.

I see... At some point she will cross that mirror. I'm curious on how you will lead us to it.

Chengar's said in the past that the Freeport stories are in a separate continuity from his EQG stories, but I do rather like the idea of Kukri making an appearance of some kind at CHS.

8134072 I dont mean the same way it happened in cannon. No more of a pursuit like with the crown but with her getting stuck on the other side for thirty moon and missing ten years in Equestria while culprit sneak back in the mirror (my head cannon is that time flow differently on each side of the mirror, Equestria going four time that of CHS, cannon Sunset cross the mirror, get stuck, manage to come back, see she got "replaced", then spend an other two and a half year plotting her revenge.)

Finally got around to reading this. Very enjoyable. Only thing I wonder about is didn't her parents send something?

A birdhouse? No, she doesn’t even like birds that much—and besides, this one would probably just get the thing stuck in its leg-holes. Again.

:rainbowlaugh:

That was so cute. The fact that the book was Daring Do makes the entire fight even more pointless. It also raises the questions, was the entire list Puzzle made prepped and ready for Kukri and was it all cheap books?

Freeport Sunset isn't on exactly the best terms with her birth parents.:pinkiecrazy:

I was thinking of more Bounty Hunters actually.

This was a nice change of pace for this series. I like the action and adventure of the other Freeport stories, but it's good to have something different now and then, particularly something like this that expands on side characters like Kukri and her relationship with Sunset. Interesting to see how her view of her sister changed after the events of The Hunted, too.

The two-way journal showing up has some odd implications. Until now, I assumed that the Freeport series diverged from canon near the end of A Moment in the Sun, like perhaps Sunset might have discovered the mirror and gone through it if Celestia hadn't caught her and had that final conversation with her before she left. But Sunset took that journal with her in the Equestria Girls timeline, so the fact that she didn't have it already by the time of Moment in the Sun implies that this Sunset actually ran away from Celestia significantly earlier than her canon self. I wonder what was different in the canon timeline that made her stay for that much longer?

Anyway, good story. Actually have nothing to criticise this time. It was just a lot of fun. Onto the next.

Wow, a cheesy moral story.

sorry couldn't help it:rainbowwild:

9074083
We now know her mother tried. (And just how significant one little throwaway line later in The Freeport Venture turned out to be. When Sunset groused she didn't want to be constantly bothered by her family trying the extralegal extradition route, she promptly forgot about it the next day. Puzzle, who she was talking to, didn't, and bounty hunters rely to some extent on being able to hire local help. By this point there are still inexperienced and poorly-connected ones willing to initially take the job, but the supply is rapidly drying up and none have gotten close enough for Sunset to even realize they're there.)

D'awwwww Kukri is just so damn precious!
