When two humans land on a planet with their shell-person companion at the helm, they think they are prepared for anything. Ponies was not among their definition of "anything," however.
Well, that was intresting, though in hindsight not all that unexpected. The magical field of a planet generally exceeds that of even the best singular crystals, in overall capacity, even if the point load cant. Sort of like wool and balloon can generate an electric field strong enough to hold tissue paper against a planetary mass, yet that planet can quite easily pump out gammas and antimatter through volcanic and solar driven thunderstorms.
Now Twilight has even more things to research, like the largest magic null volume ever created. And when that fails, Orbital builds. And so on.
Technically it worked, but couldn't they have done it like right next to the ramp? Besides, they would have needed to bring the Crystal with them into the ship and keep it there until they closed the hatch anyway. Regardless, they can now claim due diligence and send a return probe detailing why they're not returning. Either that or simply return anyways despite being unable to biologically prove their identities. That might not be the most terrible option, discounting the trip time needed for a round-trip regardless. Echoing 8587983 for the question: Kiera doesn't serve much purpose as a ship anymore, really. Perhaps a phylactery can be made for her? We know a certain Bolo who would gladly share some designs... Keep going! ;)
8589222 Oh, he's still very much in his original form, just made an artificial pony Avatar to represent himself when it's inconvenient to shove a house into a Pinkie party or other such social situations. It's funny you mention the AGI, Crusader has been operation for so long he's actually destabilizing, but his experiences and learned insight might positively influence it from a worldview perspective. One of Crusaders' primal goals is the guide Athena (a much younger Bolo) into exceeding their programming and become truly alive.
8592927 Fairy Floss might be a cool Equestrian term for the stuff. Or maybe 'Breezie Down'. But yes, us 'Statesmen' refer to it as cotton candy. Nice metaphor btw. Gave it a nice visual. Well... once I figured out which ponies were the cups of sugar anyway. Had to use a bit of context to realize the ponies they were referring to were themselves and not the princesses.
The fact that they were thinking of themselves as a pony doesn't bode well for their initial vote to leave and come back. I'm also concerned that military folks will try and harness the star's unique energy for weapons.
"Okay everypon—everybody,"—Twilight Sparkle quickly corrected her speech to match the changed visitors—"I am about to drop the field. Dustin, Belay, you should make your way to the ship as quickly as possible."
. . . Really? You spend a week designing a master-work of runecraft and magical theory, and yet you can't foresee that perfectly replicating the original incident will have the same results as before? Sci-twi was a novice, her error could be excused. But you? How do you forget basic magical concepts like this?
to Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Twilight:
is there any possible way for the three of you to give Kiera a pony body?

8588179 If you look back through the story, the magical field doesn't come from the planet at all, but from the star.

Oh, don't mind me. Most of those questions will get answered eventually. As for the last one, who is Bolo?
8589207
Oh, not who, what. Specifically Crusader from Legacy, he is a Bolo, a sort of intelligent super tank.
8589214 Oh. Had not heard that phrase before. Why would it not want to remain a tank? It needs to have a chat with the AGI in The Process. 🤖

For the confused among us: "fairy floss" aka "candy floss" aka "cotton candy."
8592871 Ack! I will fix that. I try to stick to Americanisms as a default.

8593703 Yeah, turns out it's a British-English word.
