A hundred years have passed since Celestia and Luna ruled Equestria. In a quiet moment, Empress Cadence reflects upon the changes that have happened since and the changes that are about to happen.

And she is by no means the only one to do so. Her future husband will also have to face his past before they can both face what lies ahead.

I think the biggest problem here is that it keeps referring to more interesting stories than the one we're reading. Flurry's training (and isn't she over a century old at this point?) Twilight and Cadence coping with the loss of their loved ones in their own ways, the war, two nigh-immortals mending their broken hearts together...

The end result is that it feels like we arrived late to the party and are just hearing about all the things we missed. The fact that part of that was the building chemistry between our romantic leads means that their relationship feels less organic and more like a random TSSSF play. You have a lot of interesting ideas here, but you only ever skim over them. I hope you expand some of them; you have a wealth of potential stories here.

I know, right? The basic idea I had was to create this one-shot that showed a quiet, emotional moment in the lives of my two protagonists.

And everything that led up to this point was supposed to be only hinted at, to engage the reader and make them imagine what might have happened themselves.

But the end result of that approach turned out to be that the actual one-shot really doesn't feel all that satisfying.

Yes, all those ideas might make an interesting story in a longer format in themselves. But they're really not what this story was supposed to be about.

Should mention that this is a humanized story in the description.

fully knowing that it isn't my best work.

Ranko... as somebeing that loves a well-written fic and has enjoyed your works before, to say nothing of my occasional use of that name (Ranko/Ranma)... not your best?!

It was a nice, subdued, and even heartfelt look at Equestria as we left it, one hundred years hence.

I loved it, and hope others enjoy it too! Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment, and I'm happy if you and others can enjoy this story for what it is. That alone makes it worthwhile to have released it.

But I stand by that statement. I think there's bits and pieces here that work. But as a whole, it has never lived up to what I wanted it to be.

Why? It is there in the tags.

Human tag does not equal humanized ponies. Just that humans are a part of the story.
Also not helped by the cover image you chose.

I chose? I'm not the author, but it seems like you are picking nits just for the whimsy of it.

Oh. My mistake for not noticing that, and my mistake for thinking you were.
No, I am not. Wanted to try the story out thinking it was something else, and was quite disappointed when u learned what it was.

I can understand the sentiment of you yourself judging it a bit more than others. To turn an old phrase "you are your own worst critic". The ttick is to see the good in your own work through the eyes of your readers. Just one fox's thoughts!

This was cute. Would've loved to see what Flurry thinks of their relationship, but this does feel like a story about the two of them.
