The Equestrian Ministry of Nature keeps a statistic - the census of monsters. It is used for a lot of other private and government decisions, like calculating insurance premiums, garrison sizes and marking of natural preserves. Yet, the data for this statistic has never in the ministry's history properly and fully collected, due to lack of volunteers mentally and physically able to make the survey.
One pony from a tribe that had for centuries been banished from Equestria tries to change that.

Hmm... interesting beginning (of hopefully to-be-updated-in-the-future) story. However, I don't think this is a way one does terrain research of nature
Anyway, your writing is solid and you know how to subtly hide references to the show in your story. One minor issue I'd point out it mixed up it's/its. 
Have an upvote and a track in case you plan to continue writing this story. Which I hope happens at some point

Welllllllll... Considering how long it took me to replay (The Fimfic system of automatically purging notifications does not help) you can get an idea about how much I was active around the past months. I'm doing too many things to put more time into writing at the moment, and this story needs me to go over and rethink it's key points, and likely start writing from scratch.
