[Can be read as a stand-alone]
Life is full of challenges.
Pinkie Pie knows this more than most ponies ever will. It is for this reason that she continues to try to help bring a smile to everyone she comes across. But when her newest friend Jesse, a troubled old man from another world, doesn't want her visits, doesn't want to smile, and just wants to be left alone, she's ashamed to realize that she's not sure it's even worth the effort anymore.
Ooh, um, is the title a We Are The Fallen reference?

It is!

Damn. I also read "Imaginary" for the first time today and it's certainly one of the most effective sadfics I've seen, but this one might have hit even harder. The revealed connection with "Imaginary" at the end, though not unexpected, was probably a big factor in giving it that extra kick.

I very much appreciate the feedback. I've linked blogs in the author's notes explaining how both stories are heavily based on real events in my life.
As such, it took years for me to muster up the courage to put into words the emotions I went through. Comments such as this one tell me that it was worth the effort.

Glad to be of some encouragement. As difficult as it was, the fact that you were writing from personal experience must have gone a long way towards making these stories as compelling as they are.
Wow.
That's really all I can say.

Thank you
This sequel...good sir or madame, you gave an excellent twist to the end. The two stories - "Imaginary" and "Ever After Never Came" - need to be read together to get the full experience.
Fantastic job, and in very few words.~
Is this an alternate universe or something where the Princesses are normal ponies?

No. This is Pinkie's grief-filled mind at work. It is very common, and understandable, for those filled with grief to think only of their own emotion and hardship at any given moment.
An oddball ghost happened across your fic and read it. Have a review!
