Storm of Secrets was my first story, and I made a number of beginners mistakes. I've tried to fix them but Limits of the Horizon is much better. Read this if you want to skip to LOTH without reading through SOS.

Update: as of October 2015; SOS has been HEAVILY revised and is worth re-reading until about the time they reach the forest. So far I haven't updated this summary but it's still good enough to go by.

Cadance or Canterlot? Faced with an impossible decision, Shining Armor spirals down a dangerous path. Twilight refuses to leave his side, but when a bad decision causes the situation to escalate far beyond his control; Shining Armor must face the possibility of losing everything he loves.

After years of waiting, Rainbow Dash has finally joined the Wonderbolts but it's not turning out anything like she had hoped. When a mysterious unicorn appears out of nowhere to save Derpy and disappears just as suddenly, Dash resolves to find him; following him into a world of dark secrets she could have never possibly imagined.

Twilight can tell Shining Armor is hiding something from her; he promised not to, but he is. Every night he wakes up screaming, and every day he's more afraid. She doesn't know how to help him, but he won't survive without it.

This is Cadance; can anypony hear me? We're trapped in the Everfree Forest. All I see are trees in every direction, but there's something out there; and it's coming closer. Shining Armor is sick, I think he's dying. Please, if anypony finds this message, send help.

Look at them; the blissfully ignorant citizens of Ponyville. They think their freedom comes without cost. They believe the peace they enjoy has no price. They have no idea of the war that is waged, and the sacrifices made, to win these things which they take for granted. But that is how it must be. If they ever learned the truth, everything would be undone. Listen well to my story, consider it, and then never speak of it for as long as you live. If you tell even one pony, Equestria will burn.

Set one year, after season two, in an alternate universe where Shining Armor and Cadance never married. After months of anticipation and preparation, the wedding was postponed indefinitely, one week before it was scheduled to take place. No explanation was given to the citizens of Canterlot.

Forget everything after season 2

I mostly wrote this for anyone wanting to read Limits of the Horizon’s (which is much better than SOS) without reading the full prequel. Also; I began writing SOS with the idea that while in Equestria I would try to mimic the lighthearted/ semi-corny overtones of the show but get more serious/ darker after they enter the Everfree Forest about chapter 10, so if you want to use the summary to skip the intro, be my guest.

There are a few things that I’ve changed my mind on since I first wrote this. Some of them I’ve edited in the main story (ex: breaking apart the longer chapters) but there are still some minor plot discrepancies. Sometime I hope to go back and fully update Storm of Secrets, but in the meantime the summary trumps the main story.

For anyone who read SOS when it was first published, the only important change is that Shining Armor and Twilight’s parents now worked in the Restricted Archived.
(The idea had always been that they were workaholics who were never home, and Twilight and Shining Armor never even knew what their parents were doing. Originally I’d said they were secret agents; but then I looked back at it and thought… “No.”)
