When Twilight struggles to truly grasp the meaning behind symbolic literature, she turns to her friends for help. The friend that does understand, however, surprises the mare, perhaps more than it should.
3626138 I can't think of anything else that fits or why Dash was so nervous about the poem. I"m not saying I know she's dead, I'm just leaning towards the possibility that she is.
I mean, the first three lines are really just dark and depressing, to set up the tone and emotion of the poet.
But, the last two lines are what change the death interpretation.
βIn the dark I hear a call, calling me there.β- This could be taken to mean that someone is calling the poet towards the end of the darkness, which could mean either death or depression.
βI will go there, and back again.β- This drives the depression interpretation to be my interpretation. You don't "come back" from death, but you can be called out by a willing person, or pony, and then led through depression into happiness again.
So, I don't think the poem is about death so much as it is about sadness. Could this be caused by a death? Absolutely, but that does not make the poem about death, rather, it makes it about the effects of a traumatic incident of someone's life.
Rainbow is appearing in Twilight's dream to explain it to her, after all, and is feeling immensely uncomfortable about it. Twilight found it in the library with no memory of its existence and-
Look, before it gets too convoluted in a summary I'm just going to TL;DR it and say "One theory is that Twilight wrote it to cope with Rainbow Dash being dead but, being the immortal alicorn of friendship itself, can't deal with it and blanked a friend's death from her mind.
3629281>>3626098>>3627302>>3628967>>3629180>>3626896 Okay... wow... yeah, that just happened. Um... what can I say that's not a spoiler? Well, starting, I've never "added" tags to a story. The only time I have is to make clear the timeline or universe they are partaking in. The mood, in this case fluff, does not lead into sadness.
Personally, I believe almost devotionally to the idea that to make something great you must show what is worse. In this case, I can't have Twi and RD meet in a dream, cuddle, than wake up. There has to be something happening to make the cuddling MATTER!
Okay, small spoiler, this takes place during season 3, sometime. No pony you know is dead. Roll with it.
3629307 Well that's good to know. I was dead certain for a minute there that Twilight was dead and we were getting a story from the point of view of a figment of Dash's dreams representing a part of her mind that hadn't yet accepted Twi's death. That would have been sad. I'm sad now. Dammit.

No pony you know is dead... Still sinister, oh and Dash blatantly wrote this while trying to get over the death of a loved one. Or alternatively, the writer must be somepony Dash knows personally.
3632424 Trying to not go all LoTR nerd on this but I can't. Enya composed and sung "May It Be" with Howard Shore, for the credits of The Fellowship Of The Ring. Edward Ross sang "In Dreams", written by Fran Walsh.
I did like this chapter though, and am getting really weird vibes from it. The comments before me make sense, but at the same time don't. I eagerly await more to ease my confusion.
3629180 While the poem itself may not specify the death of somepony close to you, it's entirely possible that Rainbow Dash's emotions steer her in that direction, due possibly to personal experience.
And now for my favorite hobby: translating awesome stuff into Latin! Here's the poem run through google translate:
"Cum autem frigus hiemis advenit dies Nocte teget." "Sol in velamen, amarus ambulabimus in pluvia." "Cum cadit maria montesque et ad finem dierum." "Vocare in tenebris aures, dicentes quod ibi." "Vadam, et revertar."
I'm so tired I can't think straight, so don't ask why I posted this.
huh
Oh shit, Rainbow's dead.
3626098
I'm fairly sure it just means that someone Rainbow knew died.
Her being dead wouldn't make any sense in this story.
3626098
You really think that? Then why would:
a) a sad tag be missing?
b) there be a 'fluff theme (with smut)' in the description
Or Rainbow wrote the poem for Twilight to find if she died...
Not sure yet what it truly means.

Why do so many assume she's dead?

I doubt RD is dead. I get the feeling she has been mulling over the long-term consequences of being in a relationship with a near immortal alicorn.

In what way is the Lord of the Rings referenced here?

I believe that this is Pre-Princess Twi.

In the ending of the Fellowship of the Ring, Anya sings a song called "In Dreams."

Apparently canon: Daring Do is twilight's mother.

Nope, it says Alicorn multiple times throughout the story.
