Equestria Music University. It mean a new opportunity - and a new beginning - for Octavia Philharmonica. Unfortunately, there's more than a few things she needs to deal with: like a rambunctious DJ roommate whom she despises named Vinyl Scratch; a moody rockstar pegasus named Thunderlane, who is absolutely gorgeous and also happens to be very unavailable; and a kooky musical professor who either has a massive crush on her or is crazier than Nightmare Moon.
Really, it's no wonder Octavia writes letters to her cello. It's the only thing the poor filly can trust.

I can honestly say that I am quite interested in this story. I do feel the University Days theme going on here, (Even though I've never read it.) but I actually like it.
You made the characters quite believable which is a major part in any good story. If I had never heard of Vinyl and Octavia at all, let alone living with each other, and you showed me this, I would believe without a doubt that these were their true characters. Also good.
The pacing was just right! The one thing I look for more than characterization is pacing, because writers have a bit of trouble with that. Apparently, pacing is the first word in your dictionary!
All in all, this deserves my highest gratitude, a favorite and like. Please write more so that my literary hunger may be satisfied.

I've never read University Days either, even though I have heard of it. :) Thanks so much for the note about pacing, because that's one thing that I try to improve upon most. Things need to flow nicely for me before I feel settled with publishing it.

I know it's common for people to do, but is there any particular reason of making human parallels instead of completely original characters? I mean sure, this is easier, but it's more world building and creative to come up with original names. Not that it detracts from the story, just my own opinion.
Anyways, looking good so far, I'll continue to read and see where it goes. Octavia's been my favourite character since I first saw her in the show, don't know why. I mean sure; I listen to music like 24/7, but neither Vinyl or Octavia would appreciate some of the music I listen to. However I do listen to Classical sometimes, and really don't like techno, dubstep, or really any electronic music.
I'm sure if I was there they'd both look at my taste in music with critical eyes.
(I'm not a large country fan either, but things about cars, engines, steam trains, and ships can get me to listen to it. This is by far my favourite game intro song, the video may be meh, but I really like the song.

Also, Octavia I'm fairly sure writing letters to your cello isn't great for social status. Ponies going to think you're crazy.
I was never a fan of Octavia and Vinyl fanfics, mainly because... I have never read such. You don't usually have time to read ALL the fanfics, after all, but this time I decided to give it a try. So it's your job to show me why people like Octavia and Vinyl! I'm counting on you, and judging by the first chapter, I'm certain you will succeed!
Technical thingy: you did changed the last name of Octavia in the letters, but you missed the instance when she introduces herself to Vinyl (it still says Melody, not Philharminica).

xD I think the reason most fanfic writers use human parallels is to tell the reader (without a clumsy as-you-know-Bob scene) how important or famous that pony is. I could have easily made up another pony name who's the equivalent of Beethoven, but then nobody would have known what Octavia was talking about, or how important that pony was. Also, it simply isn't an MLP fanfiction without a few obnoxious, obvious puns. (Las Pegasus, anyone?
)
That song is great! Although I see what you mean, it's not really Octavia or Vinyl Scratch's taste, although I think Octavia has a hidden appreciation for country and western (something I hope to explore in later chapters).
Anyway, I'm glad you like the story, and I hope you stick with it! :D

*gulp* That's a lot of responsibility! Thanks for pointing that out, I fixed it right away. ^^ And while I'm honored to be your first Octavia and Vinyl fic, I'm a little apprehensive. I hope I don't let you down, and I hope you stay with the story as it progresses.
I wouldn't be so sure about that Octavia, you have a fairly large following for a background character who appeared in only two episodes and doesn't have a single line of speech.
I saw about half a dozen typos, nothing too bad, but right now I'm too tired to look for them and point them out, just letting you know they're there.
As for the Author's Note; I think you got her personality fairly well grounded, no one's perfect after all.
My only problem is the fact that it's not in Vinyl's nature to grow that angry that fast. Might want to tweak that.
