Well, I've been super negligent in replying to comments, but I certainly want to assure you that this project/story is alive and well. Updates will stay relatively slow, but the team has a vested interest in keeping it alive. Here's hoping we can all make it to the end, eh. Much as I haven't replied at all, seeing your comment every time I went to adjust things was always quite the boost to spirits, and not just for myself. Cheers man, have another chapter.
Wait a minute...I've already seen this...
Oh...This was that. Still it was a mighty good read! Onwards to the next one!!
This was a damn interesting treat to read. Fade's train of thought is even more jumbled than I expected, and I love all the little moments you put in of internal asides, though I think my favorite was the improv'd third question. The whole combat stood as a harsh contrast to Snap Roll's perspective on it, who handled thing with military efficiency and a tinge of regret, whereas Fade was caught between being self-praise and uncaring, unhinged violence (with the exception of Ebb).
I really like how that scene with her was handled, too, by the way, even getting a bit of regret for killing Flow, at least that was my take. I don't know if that's just my own feelings and I'm trying to transpose them onto Fade. And it was a nice touch having her disarm the mine so quickly. Great bit of characterization, that.
And now I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to see the rest of the party's reaction to Ebb's tagging along, but I suppose I'll have to look forward to that next time, and from Snap's perspective. Great work as always man, can't wait til next time.
I got a headache reading this. The good sort of where Fade's monologue added to the story and his vocabulary choice added to it, as opposed to some say purple prose or manner of logorrhea in spite of the many attempts at fading out and changing from the plot at hand. A rather fair thing as well all things considered, since this may well be the last time we see the insides of this catburd's head for a while.
In particular I find the character charming, his search for a past is not some overwhelming part of himself that seeps and perverts his narrative, in fact there is scant acknowledgement what so ever he has some manner of amnesia or other such sundry missing parts of his character. In part, I find it makes Fade more curious, as this sets for a far more interesting reveal as he learns of his past self. Perhaps in a way this makes it more interesting where his past slots in more as a remembered memory than some sudden learning of it as with most amnesia plotlines.
I do hope he collects the brass from the LMGs, he could make some caps off of it and its shiny to boot.
I have to say, I found this Paralogue rather amusing. I thought Fade's thoughts would be more... fragmented, but it was amusing all the same. Although, I think an entire book written this way would be maddening lol
Sucks to be her. Flow is pretty past tense at this point; I kinda wonder whether that's really sunk in yet...
I get the sense that Fade at some point was some kind of higher tier mercenary, he seems awfully competent in combat to be anything short of that.
Based on how Flow ended up dying, I get the sense she was a tad more unhinged than her sister.
I like this Ebb character, she works well with Fade's persona.
Patrolling the snowy tracks of land up here makes me wish for a nuclear summer
I am so far behind on these, sorry guys. I finally found the time and mental faculty to get around to replying, and I want to say that I'm so glad this chapter was recieved like this. Seriously, you guys are all a major morale boost for the team. Doel in particular had been quite worried that people wouldn't really "get" the character he was going for, but that's certainly not the case judging from you guys.

It definitely seems that way, doesn't it.
Glad you like her! She's kinda cute in a morbid sort of way.

She's got a... rather odd worldview. Very in the moment.

Yeah, I think I'd go crazy trying to write out more than segments like that. Still, I think the leeway with it being something of a one-off (well, not quite) let the eccentricity show a fair bit more than it normally would.

Nymph, I want you to know that this comment in particular made Doel's fuckin' day when he saw it up there. I believe his words were "He gets it!" in regards to Fade. Quite the payoff, considering he'd been wondering how exactly an audience would take his particular brand of crazy for... about a year, give or take, since he'd originally wrote those bits.
And that's absolutely it, the whole... acknowledgement that he's damaged, but the fixing of said damage isn't necessarily the driving force of the character. A goal, certainly, but... yeah, you get it.
Hah, the shitty thing with hot brass in snowy conditions is that that shit burnt its way through the snow layer, then froze in place a couple inches down. Picking up brass would be quite the chore in that sort of scenario. That, and it seriously sucks.

I really wasn't sure how people would view the asides. From a technical standpoint, they're the exact thing even I'd usually advise against, in most narratives... they just kinda... fit. I'm glad the combat came out so differently. I guess this was a bit of a litmus test of whether or not I could put myself into another character's head, however temporarily, after having been in Snap's for so long. It seems to have worked.
>Flow
Despite his personality, some concepts still manage to click for him - Family's probably pretty high on that list, I imagine. He's a callous asshole most of the time, but he doesn't entirely lack empathy.
And yeah, Ebb's fun.
Oh, I'm sure Fade'll find some way to make his sudden reappearance interesting. You could even say it's... a story for another time.

I'd also harbor a guess that Ebb was the more passive of the twins, and that her and her sister would use 1 2 punches where Ebb would draw an enemy in then Flow would blast em away. With Flow dead, she would suddenly be a follower without a leader and since Fade has a domineering aura to him during "warrior mode" and he spared her life surprisingly, she may very well wish to follow him merely because she needs someone to follow after years of being beaten down and brain washed.
