That Footnote gives me chills.
I really like the idea of corrupted virtues. If only because it shows how the Elements left the Ministry Mares. (I will stand by my point that it happened not only because of their deaths, but because of their inability to stay true to their virtue.)
Rainbow Dash's True Loyalty to her friends turned into a Corrupted Loyalty only to her country.
Fluttershy's Kindness brought about the Apocalypse.
Twilight Sparkle's Magic led to terrible experiments with the DNA of the equine race and the creation of the Goddess.
Rarity's Generosity led her to mess with dark necromantic magic.
Pinkie Pie's Laughter turned vile and unnatural in the wake of not only her addiction, but also the way her Ministry suppressed freedom.
Applejack... I don't think I will talk about Applejack yet. I'll mention her after a certain event connected with SteelHooves. (You people who've read the story already know which one.)
So, in the Equestrian Wasteland, we too see corrupted virtues. Red Eye's Generosity. Gawd's Loyalty. Monterey Jack's Honesty. Silver Bell's Laughter. Magic, though... There are several candidates for that role. But it's not like a virtue can be corrupted withing a single person, right?

This is legendary, I can't believe I've heard of this fic since 2011 and only now have I read it. Truly something amazing.
3070660
Nopony deserves such a fate, in my opinion.
3070396
She had max level last chapter. Just wait till it starts giving taint-related perks...
Great chapter!!
The end of the chapter give me bad memories of New Vegas. Fucking Deathclaws.
3071475 Ey-yo, bud, you might want to go back and edit that, spoilers and all. I mean, I've read it before, but others may not have.
3074470
There have been far worse spoilers in these comments... honestly I didn't think that one was all that bad. How is the fact she gets some kind of perk from taint a spoiler? The story already says it's "affecting" her in some way, which is, um, basically the same, in Fallout terminology.
3076170 But perks are special =P
Because you don't have a clue what perk is next, or if there is a new perk, until you've read to the end of the chapter. That and the latest chapter is the first one where I've read the comments, so yeah.
3071475 Ix-nay on the oilers-spay.
3070396 But the footnote just says "Maximum Level" ?
Nice Fallout 3 reference at the beginning.
Who else else had a horrific flashback when Calamity said Old Olney?I fucking HATE Deathclaws!!!!
SPOILERS
SteelHooves is a ghoul.
And this is not a virtue?
No. You don't know what corrupted kindness is.
Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, I read a story called Rainbow Factory. For those who aren't familiar with it (and I assume you aren't, Littlepip), it's basically about "what if rainbows were made by grinding up young pegasi who weren't good enough fliers, and Dash were the current foremare of the factory where this is done?" It's even got an OC who exists only to be forced to seem important enough that we should care when he dies. It's not exactly highbrow fare, I admit. And when I was done, I felt like I had been reading a list of missed opportunities. I think it should have been very different. And chief among my opinions was that the familiar pony playing the villain should have been Fluttershy. She should have been one of the poor fliers brought in to be raw materials, and the first one in a long time to almost escape, by using her Stare. She should have been recognized as a valuable asset once she was recaptured, and brainwashed until she believed all this necessary. And she should have striven to deliver raw rainbow in the most humane manner possible. That would have left much more of an impression. And that would have been corrupted kindness.
All you have is a poor track record for long-term thinking.
And suddenly, I see the potential for comparisons to Days of Wasp and Spider. The salient point here is that, in that story, alicorns are a generically-engineered slave race, who serve faithfully even when they are treated as disposable, because it's ingrained into their brains that their sole purpose is to be useful to their Masters. I'm sure you see the parallels. And I'm sure there is something to be gained from contrasting the two stories. Some insight into the equine condition, perhaps. I shall have to consider this next time I have nothing in particular to occupy my mind.
And all that stands between you and that hospital is a few miles of the most hellhound-infested, tainted, nightmarish, Luna-forsaken part of the entire Wasteland.
Honestly, you'd probably be better off going back inside, telling the Goddess that she'll need to fix Calamity's wing if she wants your help, and hoping she doesn't change her mind. I'm sure she's got the knowledge of how to cast healing spells somewhere inside her.
Rule one of unfamiliar parts of the Wasteland: all animals, plants, and minerals are hostile until proven otherwise. That goes doubly so for anything observed to be moving, regardless of whether you want to chalk it up to wind conditions.
Really, I wouldn't worry too much about your own morality if I were you. That's not your job. You can't properly be your own oversight, anyway. Keep an eye on your friends, and they'll keep an eye on you; that's half the point of having friends out here.
Hint: setting things on fire while crossing a rickety wooden bridge is not recommended.
You're too charismatic, apparently. And Littlepip keeps finding ways out of your plans. The lessened punishment interferes with the learning process.
Respectively: everything's laced with Taint, too much, too quickly, yes, and no.
A good leader knows when to defer to the expertise of others. A good leader doesn't get overconfident like this and think her team can take down any enemy.
Fluttershy test: failed.
Although diplomacy probably wouldn't have worked anyway. Hellhounds are as rule still pretty pissed about the treatment of Diamond Dogs in pre-apocalyptic Equestria, especially with the Goddess living nearby and giving a very poor impression of ponies, and I can't think of anything you have to offer in exchange for your safety.
I assume that eventually, some sort of peace treaty is established, based mainly on the principle of "you leave us alone and we leave you alone." I wonder how a diplomatic meeting was arranged? I certainly wouldn't want to be a pony diplomat going into Splendid Valley.
I mean, really. What kind of moron expects to take out an entire burrowing population by sniping?
A refusal to kill intelligent beings is a virtue. An inability is not.
That'd be "soothe." "Sooth" is an archaic word for "truth," which now only ever appears within "soothsayer."
Diplomacy was dead as soon as the first shot was fired. What motive have they to negotiate with hostile and outnumbered ponies?
"You are clever, but not as much as you think."
A little. You do need to be careful of that. Everypony's got secrets; make sure yours are the right ones.
And it will never be socially acceptable to ask how close the parallels are. Which leaves us free to imagine the worst.
Remember that time you thought there was a radroach in an alley, but it was actually a manticore? Good times.
Where do I apply to be an officer?
Mark those words, Littlepip. That's your first warning about what are arguably the most disturbing monsters you will ever meet.
I'd argue that, at least. I feel dirty just thinking about them.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Might cooler heads have prevailed in time, had Equestria not been exploiting references to Nightmare Moon for psychological warfare?
Hmm. I wish I had some record of when chapters of this and Project Horizons were originally released. Because I distinctly remember there being suspended animation in Project Horizons as well, and I'm curious to know how much of that was already written as of when this chapter came out. Check for subtle retconning and all.
That's actually one of my favorite things about FIMFiction. It's nice being able to check if a given chapter was written before a given episode aired, or see if a story hasn't updated in two months because it's dead or because the author always writes slowly, or . . .
Amazing Story, One Problem, Is that Littlepip got the Light-step perk ages ago, and yet she floats over mines, when she doesn't need too. Like when she first met Steelhooves.
3260439
I think that's exactly how that perk fits into the story. It's not that she can walk on mines and they don't go off, but that she has a perfect technique for dealing with them.
3181050 They were worse in New Vegas. Especially their mother.
3181050 Oh man, I remember the first time I ended up in Old Olney. My best friend had told me about the prototype medic armor in the tunnels, and naturally I wanted it. Apparently, he forgot to tell me it was the most dangerous place in the Wasteland. I didn't realize there were Deathclaws fucking everywhere until I was already in the town center. I spent about an hour trying to escape... but the Deathclaws weren't about to let me get away. Make them STOP AHHHH
3686529 I charged Dead Wind Cavern at level 10 with the Golden Gloves on Master diffculty, wearing a Pre-War Buisness Suit, hyped up on ten of every drug I had. It was epic for the first twenty seconds... until I ran out of Turbo. Then it got, well, messy.
False. Hellhounds are raiders times fifty or more in violence and smarts. But they are still animals. I would kill one and put it on a barbecue.
Said no sane pony ever. Fo3's Old Olney is a well-known deathtrap, and Old Olneigh is for the same reasons.
Don't listen to Calamity's plans. You'll live longer.
I forgot about the Enclave/Hellhound relationship. Another thing that makes more sense after playing the games.
3862902
You say that now.
...Rather, they're as much animals as ponies. lol
My PipBuck began click at me
with just the right tone to sooth and embarrass the pegasus
Fluttershy has tried to talk to them, but it didn’t work
1. Clicking.
2. Soothe. (Yes, mentioned before but old habits die hard)
3. Had.
Now I'm just wondering if there was a way for LilPip to get her hooves (or horn) on a cloud walking spell. Makes thing a heckuva lot easier when dealing with these kinds of things. But then having these character specific events are what's needed to make sure you plan your advances more thoroughly otherwise you would end up stuck or having to trudge through a battle of attrition.
Would intelligence equal to sapience? It's a debate for sure seeing as being intelligent in the hell hounds regard of being able to repurpose those magical weapons to be used by them means they at least have technical know how but the ability to talk, give mercy or even show kindness? I've yet to see in this story but another story shows the very likelyhood of them having the ability to do so.
I love that Wild Arms story, I really do. Mostly because I'm a fanboy of the series but also because the author is actually really really good. Meshing Fo:E and WA together was wonderful. Shameless plugging for thatguyvex's story
“It was only after a truly exceptional horror that I dared join the fights. I did not wish them to see that I could fight, but I could no longer bear it.” She lowered her head, looking to me with tears in her eyes. “Before you, the slavers. Before the slavers, my husband. Before him, my parents. I have never owned myself. I am not comfortable with the idea. I know this role. I can survive it.”
This paragraph hit me hard.
Pinkie should have risen from the dead and spontaneously teleported so she could shout "FOREVER"
3862902 Basically they're orks.
0-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/tg/image/1372/74/1372743594129.jpg
Why does Maripony remind me of The Divide? Maybe it's the all the slanted buildings. And I seem to remember something about a super-power-armor suit built by the Enclave in California. Don't you dare tell me that's what Rainbow's building with all those towers.
I'm calling it now, Velvet Remedy's Hellhound, the one she paralyzed and healed before they made it to Fillydelphia is going to be part of the incoming swarm.
4582803 I don't know, but that memory orb with Pinkie calling out Little Pip by name for watching them, that almost made me burn my computer!
* Isn't it poetic that the perfect emoticon for that line is Pinkie?
** She knows...
SHIT! Looks like it's time to break out the mods.
5087140 I thought you said metis. A metis would work too though
The Great and Powerful Dog Whistle?
Oh yeah, now we only have to gather a few dozens in one place and drop a bridge on them...
That's what we're afraid of...
Yeah, because that's what Calamity needs: more firepower.
It may be a sign that you need to visit Homage... Depending of those places.
On the other hand, I recall Blackjack's mane being constantly itchy. But that might be some hygiene issue
Hmm, since I just read TaleSpin TV Tropes page, I immediately thought of the Sea Duck:

Should've listen to her...
Velvet took a level in badass...
A clear sign saying, "Blackjack wasn't here"...
Whoops... Littlepip, you should tell Homage to get some thicker walls...
What we're blowing up and when?
Well, there's stuff in the Wasteland Mr. Red Runner didn't dream of...
Dr. Whooves is on it, definitely (Homage and Jokeblue would agree).
I don't remember that part exactly, but I have a feeling that Brickbane is still somewhere there...
5074707 Oh, hey! Strange to find you here. :P
This is silly and has nothing much to do with the story, but I have to write it just to get it out of my head, after reading about a Rad engine under development by Redeye.
"We have completed a working Rad engine. Would you like to see it?"
Following "The Professor" into the room, I witnessed the most bizarre thing I'd seen since breakfast. A huge steel-mesh drum slowly rotated, linked to a whirring generator by a series of sprockets and chains, it was providing power for ...a game arcade.
Inside the drum treadmill, shuffling mindlessly toward a glowing radioactive chunk of metal they would never reach, were a dozen zombies.
"Clever," I opined--"and sick. Mostly sick." Upon receiving this accolade, my guide began dancing in delight, "Yes! I know! Isn't it wonderful?"
That cannot POSSIBLY be a coincidence... And if it is, you have to be the laughing stock of the Random Number Goddess.
EDIT:
It even appeared a second time; the name of Rainbow's fan was Torchwood! You HAVE to be a Whovian.
5865578
Take another look at the mention of rakes in Chapter 29.
Reference.
Whohoohoo, wow... damn Calamity, you messed up big time mehtinks! XD
hehehe
Awesome job on this chapter! :D
Relax, I doubt somepony like YOU is Xeniths' type anyway.
DAMN YOU, ENCLAAAAAAVE!!
Don't worry girl, you'll probably earn a new level and perk right about now, right?
The Goddess knows all!
Old Olny- Check
Multicultrism- Check
Brotherhood Scribes- Check. Prime is coming
Notes: What the FUCK does the Single Pegasus Project do?
OH SH-E-IT! ITS GAME TIME!!!
6331169 singularity coordination.
6331169 I think it was supossed to be some sort of broadcast or weather control..................maybe??????
6071405 Ikr?!?!?!??!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
revenge from lilpip using calamity's weakness
3862902 hmmm do you think they taste good with ketchup ?
Anyone else think the logical response to a cloud keyboard is to just open up the back and plug the pip-boy/buck in there, completely circumventing the main security feature? Additionally all you'd need to get through a cloud lock is any non-pegasus solid object, shove it in like a key and effectively break the lock.
The Great Pegasus Enclave has apparentley forgotten that most ground-bound, non-pegasus manufactured objects pass straight through clouds having spent 2 centuries apparenly forgetting the ramifications of "only pegasus ponies can walk on clouds"
Am I evil for liking littlepip's embarrassment? I mean it is just sssssooooo damn ENTERTAINING!!!!
6331169 i remember Calamity saying it made the clouds solid enough to actually grow crops on.
he jokingly called it "cloud seeding".
