Princess Cadance has some problems in her sovereignty over the Crystal Empire. For one thing, she isn't even a crystal pony. Another thing is that the crystal ponies would much rather have the former King Sombra rule over them... despite previously reigning with an iron hoof and treating the populace like whipping mules. To prevent civil war, Cadance has a brilliant idea to ensure her bid for the throne while pleasing the people: have an election.

And it's any wonder ponies don't have democracy.

Sombra, deposed King of the Crystal Empire, has found a being whose cruelty matches his own—a rabbit named Angel Bunny. There is only one course of action that Sombra can now take that makes sense to him.

He must cuddle Angel.

Today, King Sombra is reviled as one of the darkest and most evil beings to ever blight the face of the world. When the Crystal Empire was freed from his grasp, the people of Equestria were more than happy to forget him.

But Sombra was not slain, and he has not forgotten. He alone knows the truth behind his tyranny, the reason for his fall.

And he will be remembered.

A few weeks after returning from the Crystal Empire, Twilight Sparkle receives a parcel in the mail from Princess Cadence. Within it, was the diary of a pony that lived during the reign of King Sombra. What mysteries could be hidden between the covers of the ancient tome?

Sombra has been sentenced to "The Pit", one of Tartarus' pony prisons. In the underworld, it's hard to care for anypony other then yourself. Sombra is no different, looking only after himself, longing to return to the overworld and regain his throne in the empire. Events transpire however... changing Sombra. When introduced to an unusual thing, he begins to feel his heart softened as it was many years ago.

Though in Tartarus, friendship does not last forever, and the more you try and remember it... the more you forget it.

King Sombra has a few ideas that he wants to go over with his advisor, Shale.

Princess Cadence decides to research some questions about the history of the Crystal Empire, but is troubled by her findings. How did King Sombra come to be? What are the origins of the Crystal Heart?

After receiving a strange letter from Aunt Orange, Applejack and the gang go to Manehatten where they find her Aunt Orange in love with...King Sombra?

Everyone thought King Sombra was dead. Or lost. Or lost and headed towards death. But for a pony with magic, it's not too hard just to teleport someplace else, out of the terrible snow and somewhere where light shines. Somehow King Sombra ends up teleporting to Ponyville, wanting to escape from his horrific past.
It turns out, the only way to get away from his bloodied path is through music - the last thing anypony was expecting.

With his dark past heavy on his mind, Sombra is put to the test as he begins a reformation process. Though his thoughts are clearer and no longer crowded with the influence of dark magic, his heart is none the lighter. Will Pinkie's motto of "Giggle at the Ghosties" be enough to turn a tyrant good? Or Will Sombra succumb to the power of dark magic once more? But more importantly, will the reason for his tyrannical rule finally come to light?

Inspired by a series of one shots and the very popular "Feeling Pinkie Mean", though with a more serious undertone.
