Fanart: Three Pieces, Many Colors · 6:31pm Apr 8th, 2022

We'll probably never see this many at once again. (Let's face it: with me, 'one' is a surprisingly high number.) But I let them build up a little, so...

First up, we have Harwick with something even more unofficial than normal fanfic art.

In writing about the Mane Cast and those around them, I've slowly built up a series of differences. The show tends to stick with a Standard Pony Body Type. I don't. It gives Harwick more of a challenge when he works in-'verse than with his standard compositions, because he has to account for the variations.

So what you're seeing here is his playing around with proportions. Getting a feel for how three of our heroines relate to each other on the size scale.

(I do have permission to post this artwork, but it has no DA page of its own.)

Next, an interpretation of Cerea, by Rover.

I don't have any links on this one, as the art was delivered in the Discord server and Rover said they have no active site account. In this case, I was told directly that the artist was working without having seen the original source material, so... imagination takes over.

As if y'all aren't going to mostly focus on the armor design anyway.

And finally, the only one I do have a DeviantArt link for.

I've known about this one for a while, in the sense that I was aware it was a project in progress and the creator consulted with me about how some things might look. And that's probably why it took so long to finish, because the writer just suggests things in simple words and then the artist has to figure out what it looks like. Pony in food prep? Probably gonna use a hair net. Well, there's two sources of hair. So now there's a tail net. ...so how does a tail net work? What's the configuration? How does a pony even put it on? (You back into or sit on the net holder. Very. Slowly.) Little details which are easy for me to say, but become a lot more difficult to show.

So this took a while. (I asked about how many total hours of work went into it. I am not going to repeat that number, because it makes me want to kick myself. A lot.) Pretty much all of that is my fault.

But you have to see the results.

Bitter/Sweet, by RDT.

All I have are weak words.

And 'thank you' never feels like it's enough.

Give them their honors.

Incredible, all three.

The Stamp may be my favorite part of the last one, simply because of the mouth grip. It is wholly alien to my expectations as a creature with thumbs, and a wonderfully subtle bit of world-building as a result.

But yeah, you deserve every bit of art your work inspires and more besides. I’d contibute to it myself, but that is very much not where my strength lies.

Comment on size: One thing about being tall is a constant checking around my feet to make sure I'm not stepping on something/one. I remember acutely being young and around my mother's huge family, most of whom are up in the six-foot range and the women tend to traditional German builds. I had my mental sense of size set back then, so I tend to not realize my own strength, still thinking I need to scurry out of the way when people were headed in my direction. Twilight was small, is still small, and would have much the same mental mindset of 'don't step on me' in all circumstances despite her overwhelming magical ability.

Addendum: Not a mindset thing, a description thing. If this drawing is accurate to how you view Twilight, the horse-term is 'underfleshed', and you need more 'gaunt'-type words describing her.

I do remember scenes of Spike trying to feed her, but that she 'rides the line' of being too thin. If I'm seeing rib-shadows? Over-thin in a horse or pony. (If it's her hasty grooming being shown, my apologies!)

Post-timeskip, she likely has the same problems you do exacerbated by earth-pony magic that she probably needs to learn how to control. Which of course causes even more problems in the Triptych-verse than it does in normal headcanons.

5649485 "I'm sorry," said Twilight in her absolutely most sincere voice, in a way that Applejack knew without a doubt was perfectly honest and without a shred of deception, although she could also sense a whole stack of apologies for past misdeeds behind it, and worse, a whole passel of future apologies for whatever Future-Twilight did next week, or next year.

"That's fine," said Applejack. "The barn was already plum near ten years old and startin' to look a bit shabby. We was probably gonna hafta tear it down and rebuild next year anyway. Jus' gonna be a little early, that's all. Asides, it was me who brought up politics while we was walkin' anyway."

Princess Twilight drooped even more in the afternoon Sun, little flecks of charred wood dropping out of her mane and a faint ring of dust still coiling unnaturally around her. "I stomp when I get aggravated. You know that."

"Yep." Applejack took one last look at the location of the Southwest barn, or at least what was left after a hundred-trot spur of rock had burst out from under it and proved propulsion to send it, or at least most of it, into what could be considered Equestrian orbit. "Don't worry, Twi. We'll work on it."

Very nice. Seems clear that AJ is a working pony who probably masses twice what Twilight does.

I meant that more in the sense of "oops I accidentally the Masquerade because I didn't know about it". That is, if any pegasus or unicorn had been nearby that's a major pillar of the setting randomly destroyed.

Got me to reread Bitter/sweet. I forgot how great it was. Tears in my eyes.

oh, "tail net" reminds me of a "tales of the Questor" comic where an artist who worked with paint had a drop cloth wrapped around her tail...

All fan art is the best ever, and these three pics are truly lovely!

(desire for large Harwick image intensifies) :raritystarry:

Outstanding work on all three!

Ohhh!! Oh wow. Virtual claps for all!

Three pieces of nice art, indeed. :)
