MLP, D&D, and breath weapons · 3:25am Jan 2nd, 2022
Something I was thinking about the other day.
In the show, we have dragons of numerous colors, but they all breathe fire. Some of them are of different colors, but it is fire all the same.
In Dungeons and Dragons, there are fifteen official types of dragons: five chromatic; five metallic; and five gem. Focusing on the chromatic, each color has a different breath weapon: black - acid; blue - lightning; green - poison; red - fire; and white - cold. Notice that there is no yellow, orange, or purple.
However, MLP has dragons in that color. Specifically Spike, who is purple, and Smolder, who is orange.
Now, let's say that the MLP dragons had breath weapons related to their colors as per Dungeons and Dragons. In some cases, it would be easy to assign the elemental type to their breath. For instance, Ember is blue, so she would release electricity. Garble is red, and so would continue to breathe fire.
As mentioned above though, Spike is purple, Smolder is orange, and neither is an official color.
So, I ask, what type of breath weapons do you think they would have? If up to you, what would it be?
If the color of each one doesn't help why not the color of their breath in show. Spike would be poison and for Smolder what ever her breath color is in the show.
Spike could be an amethyst dragon, meaning he'd have force damage.
Likewise, Smolder being a topaz dragon means necrotic damage. Talk about bad morning breath.
I don't consider either of them chromatic dragons at all, but very exotic metallics.
Spike is a cesium dragon. His fire burns faster than entropy, which is how he can use it to transmit information. This doesn't make sense, but dragons are magical enough to get away with it.
Smolder is a uranium dragon. Her breath looks like fire, but the Geiger counter disagrees.

But caesium burns blue...
Octarine is described as greenish-purple, so Spike probably just breathes magic.
Purple and Orange dragons were things back in the older editions (if you don't want to just make them gem dragons). There are a LOT more varieties of chromatic, metallic, and gem dragons than have been updated to 5E so fat. Purple dragons, also called Deep Dragons, had acid and mind control breath. Orange dragons, also called Cobra Dragons, breathed fire and had an extremely venomous bite. Their bite mostly helped make up for the fact that for dragons they were tiny, reaching only 43 feet at most. I know that sounds big but compared to say, a Black dragon's 84 feet or any of the big dragons...

Okay, that leads to an interesting possible story concept. Spike (pre time jump) wakes up one morning and discover he has a new breath weapon which gives him mind control. At first, he states that he obviously won't use it, but when some unruly nobles refuse to listen, he ends up doing so in order to get them to leave. After, his still being a child and is draconic nature tempts him to use it in order to get what he wants.
