    Greetings, fellow horse-word enthusiasts!

It has been a fair bit since my last update, so I thought that I'd poke my head in and let you all know that the ever-turning literary machine in my brain hasn't broken down as of yet, even if it is slower than continental drift.

    Unbound's Finale (Update)

    Hello again.

Once again, I'd like to apologize for the delay in finishing Unbound. Life has unfortunately gotten in the way a fair bit, and I haven't had much time to write as of late.

This time, though, I have some good news! I'm almost done with the remaining chapters!

Story Summaries · 6:55pm Mar 18th, 2021

When I wrote Angel of Justice, I was new to creative writing and pretty inexperienced with writing in general. As such, it is one of my weakest works from a quality standpoint. I have tried to fix it up over the years, but there is only so much I can do without completely overhauling the entire story.

However, it is required to know about the events of AoJ and some of my other stories to fully enjoy my latest works. Thusly, I have decided to summarize my previous works for those who seem interested in one or more of my stories but don’t want to read AoJ or something else for whatever reason.

If you’ve already read all of my works, you can ignore this blog post. If you need a refresher, or if you want to skip past one of my stories, scroll down until you see the warning with that story’s title.

(Also, I apologize for the length of the AoJ summary. It seems like nothing about that story is short)

It is late one night when Twilight Sparkle receives a letter from the princess, requesting her to bring a mysterious package to Zecora for further examination. Twilight and her friends deliver this package, only to discover it to be some sort of shadowy blob that feels cold to the touch and almost seems alive.

Later, Twilight is attacked out in the Everfree by creatures bearing a striking similarity to the shadowy blob. She is nearly cornered and killed by these monsters, when a blinding light appears, leaving behind a member of a race long thought extinct. A human.

This human displays odd powers and knowledge of the creatures and saves Twilight with the use of a glowing blue sword. He introduces himself as Thomas Greene, or Tom for short, and without any knowledge of the strange new land he is in, agrees to go with Twilight back to her friends.

More of the creatures attack and Tom uses his strange powers to defend the ponies against them. Among these powers is an ability to produce a ray of blue light from his hands which heals others and proves harmful to monsters, enhanced strength and stamina, the ability to regenerate from most forms of damage, the ability to sense paranormal entities, and the ability to summon what Tom refers to as ‘spirit weapons’ in the form of bladed claws.

The group learns from Tom that he is what is known as a ‘slayer’, a being killed by unjust circumstances or ill will that is brought back to life with innate power and knowledge to fight the evils of the world. He explains that slayers use willpower and a burning sense of determination, along with their body’s own stamina, to fuel their powers, and that if a slayer were to be overwhelmed or otherwise find themselves without the mental and physical strength to continue, their powers would cease working and they could be killed again.

Twilight agrees to offer Tom a place to stay as thanks for saving her and her friends. The boy joins them back in Ponyville and decides to help them find out the cause of his sudden appearance in Equestria and the strange new monsters and shadowy substance appearing throughout the countryside.

The group eventually discovers the cause of these new monsters to be a band of ponies in hoods with strange abilities and knowledge of magic from the human world.

This group consists of:

Raincloud, a grayish-blue pegasus mare with white hair, pale blue eyes, and a storm cloud mark. She has an ill temper and an apparent dislike of Twilight and her friends. On top of being able to use a force known as shadow magic to perform many feats that only unicorns should be capable of, she also has a living shadow attached to her that she has had since birth in one form or another. This shadow follows her every order and is fiercely protective of her.

Dust Kicker, a brown pegasus stallion with black hair and a dust devil mark. He is Raincloud’s brother, and he displays the ability to summon shadow creatures with his shadow magic.

Cotton Quill, a white unicorn stallion with brown hair and a book and quill mark. He is the newest and most ostracized member of the hooded ponies. He doesn’t know how to use shadow magic, but is desperate to prove his worth to their leader, despite his many failings.

Raven Feather, a black earth mare with white hair and green eyes that leads her colleagues in the pursuit of an ancient ritual known as ‘the eternal night’, which she believes will allow ponies like her to thrive in Equestria and allow all of ponykind to harness the dark world of the paranormal instead of cowering from it.

Grimwood, a white earth colt with black hair and no mark. He is Raven Feather’s brother, and shows as much knowledge and passion for darker forms of magic as his sister. With the help of another colleague, he attempts to help his sister with her misguided approach toward the ritual of the eternal night, believing her to have made an error in her translation of the ritual.

Shadow Mist, a red earth stallion with black hair and a lantern mark. One of the first members recruited, he rescued a young Raven Feather and Grimwood on the run from townsponies trying to take them back with his innate ability to use shadow magic to turn himself invisible. Assists Grimwood with trying to correct the ritual under Raven Feather’s nose, leading to misfortune for all parties involved.

Over the course of the next few days, Twilight and her friends find themselves wrapped up in monster attacks caused by these ‘hooded ponies’, each of which being started by summoning symbols drawn somewhere within the location of the attack.

Through these attacks, the group is introduced to a band of ponies in black tactical vests sent by Princess Luna to help them in their investigation. These members of the later dubbed Supernatural and Paranormal Investigation, Reconnaissance and Intervention Team (Spirit for short) were hoof picked by Luna after books containing knowledge of darker forces were brought to her attention.

Their members include:

Brimstoke: A middle-aged bulky earth stallion with white fur, gray mane, blue eyes, and a gray shield mark with two swords crossing over it. He is the leader of the team and an exemplary member of the royal guard.

Neon Streak: A middle-aged lime green earth mare with black hair, dark green eyes, and a green and black lightning bolt mark. She is another member of the guard that served with Brimstoke and went to the academy with him.

Sunspot: A younger dark orange pegasus mare with similarly orange hair that has yellow stripes running through it and her tail. She has yellow eyes and a wispy comet as a cutie mark. Unlike her teammates, she is an ex Wonderbolt that left the squad to take a more active role in helping her fellow ponies. Also unlike her teammates, she wears a modified, mask-less, and recolored black Wonderbolt suit with many pockets, clips, and pouches sewn into the front.

Glimmer Shine: A younger earth stallion with yellow fur, brown hair and eyes, and a heart-shaped ruby mark. Fresh out of the academy, but with a commendable talent and brave spirit, he and his brother are among the greenest of the team, but he doesn’t let that stop him from protecting his fellow ponies.

Peppermint: A younger earth stallion with white fur, red eyes and hair. His mark is a cluster of transparent red crosses hovering around a larger one. He is Glimmer’s younger, meeker brother that joined the guard mostly to help others with his knowledge of medicine. He is less brave than his companions, but he tries his best to not let that affect him on the job when lives are at stake.

Glitterball: A younger unicorn mare with white fur, blue eyes, and a rainbow-colored polka-dotted mane that she keeps tied up in a ponytail. Her mark consists of a star outline made of blue and red glitter. Another member of the guard, she met Glimmer and the others in the academy before she transferred to focus more on becoming a unicorn guard.

These monster hunters help Twilight and her friends with surviving the many monster attacks caused by the hooded ponies, and they also use their sparse knowledge on unique forms of magic to assist with the investigation into finding the hooded cult and stopping them.

Eventually, the group captures Cotton Quill, one of the cult’s members, and interrogates him on where his colleagues’ base of operations is. He is reluctant at first, but Twilight manages to win him over. He tells them about his former comrades and their goal, as well as where they are based. However, he is killed for his treachery when Raincloud’s living shadow comes through a wall and slices his neck with a set of razor-sharp claws.

With the knowledge given to them by the deceased unicorn, Twilight, her friends, Tom, and the members of Spirit are led by Princess Luna herself on a raid of the hooded ponies’ base. A mansion from human times magically preserved over the years and forgotten in the hidden depths of the Everfree forest.

However, disaster strikes on this mission, as Raven Feather and her colleagues learn of the team’s arrival. With mere minutes to spare, Shadow Mist volunteers himself to stay behind while the others flee so he can release the group’s last resort. Three vengeful ghosts of the mansion’s human owners empowered by magic and sealed away by magical symbols scattered around the building.

During the raid, these ghosts prove to be a brutal and violent foe to Shadow Mist and all others trapped in the mansion.

Shadow Mist gets one of his forelegs cut off and an eye stabbed out as he is trying to gather materials and research needed for Grimwood’s plan, but he manages to escape with his shadow magic.

Rainbow Dash and Twilight have a run-in with one of the ghosts, a pale human woman with a pair of scissors and a manic disposition. Rainbow is nearly fatally wounded, but through the efforts of both Twilight and Peppermint, the group manages to keep her alive until Tom can heal her.

Fluttershy and Neon Streak end up being captured by another one of the ghosts, a middle-aged man with brown hair and glasses. He straps them to tables and prepares to torture them. However, Neon protests to him hurting the pegasus. Amused, the ghost offers her a deal. If she can endure one hundred cuts of varying size and pain, he will let both of them go without touching Fluttershy.

However, this proves to be a mere lie, as the ghost gradually gives in to his bloodthirsty desires. As Neon Streak is about to break free and dispatch the spirit with one of the team’s magical weapons (called a strobe), the ghost slices her throat, killing her and forcing Fluttershy to watch.

The others rescue the pegasus at the last minute, but they are forced to leave their friend’s body until they can escape.

Later, Fluttershy and her five fellow bearers get captured by the same ghost. He slowly toys with and tortures them, but is eventually stopped when Peppermint sneaks into the room to rescue them. Unfortunately, the stallion is mortally wounded in this rescue attempt, and though he manages to free the six mares, he dies shortly before Glimmer Shine and the others can reach them.

Traumatized, grief-stricken, and exhausted both mentally and physically, the group presses onward to destroy the three protective seals and get rid of the ghosts forever. They eventually have a final confrontation with the spirits at the site of the last seal.

During this confrontation, Brimstoke is killed by one of the spirits, a tall mute man with an axe. However, the spirits are unable to stop the group from breaking the seal, and subsequently get sucked into a swirling mass of light and energy.

This triggers a chain reaction, where all of the ghosts' consciousnesses take control of the raw cloud of energy that once fueled them. Luna gets trapped by this cloud of energy, and the group is forced to leave her to what seems to be her fate. They all manage to escape, and the ghosts are finally purged as the magical symbol finishes dispersing all of their energy.

Later in Canterlot, on the day that the group is holding the funerals for their fallen friends, Raven Feather and her remaining group attack the palace. They flood the city with darklings, the same shadow creatures Twilight first saw in the Everfree, and manage to defeat both Celestia and Tom.

Twilight and the others scramble to try and stop the mare’s plan to enact the final ritual meant to summon the eternal night and plunge the world into an everlasting, monster-infested nightmare. They do battle with Raincloud and Dust Kicker, managing to hold their own against the magically powered pegasi.

However, growing impatient with how long her colleagues were taking to dispatch the six mares, Raven Feather uses her own shadow magic to turn invisible to sneak into the room. She uses the broken remains of Tom’s sword and stabs Twilight in the chest, mortally wounding her.

Rainbow Dash and the others carry their dying friend away but are unable to leave the great hall before the unicorn collapses. They share a teary goodbye with her before she succumbs to her wounds and passes away.

After the five remaining bearers of harmony leave to regroup with their new monster-hunting friends, Raven Feather and her group begin their ritual.

Celestia is forced to watch as they invoke an ancient, darker power. However, nothing seems to happen at first.

Grimwood attempts to step forward and correct his sister’s mistake, but she is too distraught from having her life’s work fail in front of her to listen. Her unexpected outburst stuns the normally reserved colt, and he inadvertently steps into the center of the symbol they had created, causing a well of dark energy to burst forth and flow into him.

Raven Feather and her group rush to the colt’s aid, eventually managing to break the symbol and stop the reaction. She quickly apologizes for her careless words causing her brother this harm, but she soon realizes that Grimwood is no longer a pony.

Something dark and ancient possessed Grimwood’s body when he stepped on the symbol. It quickly kills Raven Feather in an unexpected strike and then kills Dust Kicker when he tries to intervene. A grief-stricken Raincloud leaves with promises of revenge, leaving only Shadow Mist, Celestia, and the newly dubbed ‘Shade’ in the room.

Meanwhile, a battered and exhausted Tom finds Twilight’s body and attempts to heal her. Through much force of will and a refusal to simply let the unicorn die, he manages to revive her at the cost of his own life. Twilight awakes and discovers the boy’s unconscious form, which quickly starts to dissolve into floating embers.

The sorrowful unicorn resolves to reunite with her friends and put a stop to the hooded ponies once and for all. However, she is nearly killed out on the streets by darklings, only to be saved by none other than Princess Luna. The alicorn reveals that she had managed to flee the cloud of energy thought to have killed her, only to collapse from exhaustion as she returned to Ponyville, where she rested in secret until she returned to find Canterlot in shambles.

Together with the princess of the night and all her friends, Twilight returns to the palace to rescue Celestia and stop the eternal night from happening. However, they find and do battle with a possessed Shadow Mist, and the newly re-animated bodies of Raven Feather and Dust Kicker.

With a reluctant alliance with Raincloud, the group manages to hold their own against the three magically empowered ponies. Raincloud nearly dies, only to be rescued by Rainbow Dash. This confuses and stuns the pale pegasus.

Eventually, the group defeats Shadow Mist and the two animate corpses of Raincloud’s brother and former friend. In a final act of defiance, Shadow Mist stabs himself with a sharpened blade of shadow energy, ending his own life.

Then, the group must face a newly transformed Shade. The dark entity has morphed Grimwood’s body from that of a colt into a monstrous stallion with shadowy skin and seeming control over darkness itself.

A grueling battle takes place. Raincloud gets knocked unconscious after her living shadow gets permanently destroyed. Many of the others, the princesses included, are powerless to stop Shade. Twilight and the others are forced into using the elements of harmony, but Shade is able to counter the beam of prismatic light with a beam of his own shadowy energy. He nearly kills the six mares as the beam overtakes them, and all appears to be lost.

Then, a familiar bright light appears in the room, leaving behind none other than a freshly resurrected Tom. The boy uses his own power in combination with Twilight and her friends. With the combined force of his ray of light and the elements of harmony, Shade is defeated, leaving behind the skeletal body of a young colt as a grim reminder of all that had been lost in this venture.

Later, Tom vaguely dodges around the details of his resurrection to a curious Twilight on their way back to the library. He recalls waking up on a park bench in a beautiful local familiar to him in the human world. He is greeted by someone that he recognizes to be his dead friend, Henry, the same friend that had been with him and died when he fell victim to a serial killer and subsequently became a slayer.

The other boy soon reveals that he is not Henry, but merely thought that Tom would adjust easier to a familiar face. He reveals that he is the creator of all slayers and the one that sent Tom forward in time to Equestria in the first place. Through some conversation, ‘Clarence’ as he calls himself, convinces Tom to let go of the self-doubts that led to him being defeated and eventually dying at the hooves of Raven Feather and sends him back to Equestria to save the ponies from Shade with the newly reinvigorated spark of willpower and bravery that all slayers hold.

The story ends with Tom living in Ponyville with Twilight and Spike, eager to adjust to his new life and offer his new friends his power and expertise in ridding them of the new supernatural entities and events caused by Raven Feather’s experiments. The remaining members of Spirit, Glimmer Shine, Sunspot, and Glitterball, resolve to stay together as a team under Luna’s leadership and continue their mission of protecting their fellow ponies from monsters of all varieties.

Twilight, Tom, and all of their friends are invited to a water resort for free, with the stipulation that they rid the resort of their ghost problem. Matters are complicated as the group travels through an abandoned underground portion of the resort full of broken-down animatronic robots, mascot suits, and other, darker entities known as ‘inhuman spirits’

Through this quest to survive and defeat the ghosts, the group is introduced to the owner and staff of the resort, including a gray earth mare with white hair, green eyes, and two meshing cogs for a cutie mark named Sparkplug. She shows a passion for hunting ghosts, and through the adventure, she helps the others survive.

In the end, Sparkplug sheepishly asks Glimmer Shine and his friends if she can join their team. They agree to allow her the opportunity to show her merit to Princess Luna, who eventually agrees to sign her on after they take her to some on-the-job training.

A side plot to this story involves Glimmer Shine and Sunspot working out their differences in how they approach situations. Sunspot typically acts first and thinks later, often endangering herself and sometimes damaging her surroundings. Glimmer thinks this is far too reckless for the job they have, and often gets onto her about being more careful and listening to his instructions.

This comes to a head in a heated argument during the case at the resort, where Sunspot remarks that the team was more cohesive and better off back before Glimmer Shine’s brother Peppermint and the other members of their group died. Glimmer is understandably shocked by this, and despite Sunspot’s immediate apology, brushes her off and refuses to talk further about it.

Later on, during the final confrontation with the ghost primarily causing the problems at the resort, Glimmer Shine and Sunspot find themselves dangling off a rock above a large chasm, with Sunspot’s wing broken and her body slipping off. Glimmer tells her to let him go and save herself, but she refuses, admitting her guilt at letting Peppermint go off on his own and eventually getting himself killed. The pair are soon rescued at the last minute, and resolve their issues, returning to being close friends and a cohesive team.

*Warning. Below is a brief summary of  ‘One Simple Question’. It is a short story that takes place immediately after Angel of Justice.*

One Simple Question details an exchange between Raincloud and Rainbow Dash after the gray pegasus asks to see the cyan mare from prison. Raincloud wishes to know why Rainbow saved her during the final fights in Angel of Justice, and Rainbow simply replies “Because you were in trouble.”

This frustrates Raincloud, and the two go back and forth in their conversation, learning a bit more about Raincloud’s childhood and her relationship with her now missing shadow creature. Rainbow walks away still disliking the pegasus for all that she had done but feeling a bit more of an understanding with her, while Raincloud feels conflicted about the cyan mare actually leveling with her and treating her with some form of respect.

*Warning, below is a summary of ‘Off the Beaten Path’. It takes place after Spiritus ex Machina. Do not read further if you intend to read it.*

Off the Beaten Path follows Rainbow Dash as she realizes that a new arrival to Ponyville is one of her friends from high school, a pegasus stallion named Blue Bolt with dark blue fur and eyes and black hair. His cutie mark is a black circle with an arrow twisted in the middle and pointing skyward made to resemble a lightning bolt.

Twilight and the others invite Blue Bolt to a hike they are planning to reacquaint him with Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy and get to know him themselves. Rainbow agrees, despite having anxious feelings and apparently bad memories of how she parted with the stallion. A storm hits the group while they camp, and as they attempt to find shelter, a mudslide knocks both Blue Bolt and Rainbow Dash into a forest below a cliff, seemingly breaking both their wings.

Throughout the journey, as the pair has to try and survive and find a way home, they recall their brief friendship at school and how they parted under bad terms.

A few days after they met, Blue Bolt pushed Rainbow Dash out of the way of a rogue lightning bolt created by some bullies, ending up with one of his wings paralyzed. Rainbow and Fluttershy assist him with physical therapy and seemingly get him back to full flight ability.

However, unbeknownst to either of them, Blue’s wing fails again while he is at school from a pinched nerve, resulting in the permanent loss of function in that wing. He hides this from both of them and starts to distance himself from Rainbow Dash, resulting in him blowing her off at the school dance and telling her that he doesn’t want to be friends anymore.

After this, Rainbow Dash went on feeling like the stallion truly didn’t like her, and felt hurt because of this.

Their journey through the woods grows tenser, as both nature and their past seem bent on keeping them apart and stopping them from getting home. The tension comes to a head as Rainbow asks Blue if he left Cloudsdale because of her, to which he reluctantly answers yes. Shocked and hurt by years of pent-up feelings coming to the surface, Rainbow tells Blue that they should go their separate ways after they make it out of the forest.

However, as they are making a signal fire to alert Fluttershy, Sunspot and some other pegasi searching for them to their presence, they are attacked by timberwolves. Blue Bolt leads them away but ends up getting mauled near to death.

Rainbow manages to fight the wolves off with a flaming branch and rushes to her friend’s side. As he thinks he is dying, Blue decides to tell her everything about what happened. He tells her that he never broke his wing when they fell off the cliff into the forest and that it had always been paralyzed from school. He tells her that he didn’t want her blaming herself for his lost ability to fly since he knew she blamed herself for his accident, so he told her that he didn’t want to be friends anymore.

The pair reconcile and are soon rescued and taken to Ponyville hospital. Blue Bolt survives his injuries, and he and Rainbow Dash spend their recovery time getting to know each other again. After they are discharged, Rainbow brings her human friend Tom to Blue’s house to heal his lame wing. They both share the dance they never got at school as Blue takes flight again for the first time in years, rekindling their friendship and perhaps starting them down the road for something more.
