New Midnight Rising chapter off to prereaders...

At long last. This is the redo of the chapter I was forced to scrap in April and then about 80% rewrite. I saved a few select bits and pieces from the original version, but the rest went by the wayside.

Still pecking away on Midnight Rising and Feathered Hearts...

The two Lemon Zest chapters of Midnight Rising have now reached 26,600 words and they’re still nowhere near done, with probably another 5-6k words to go. Gotta treat the girl right, after all, and also make sure there’s plenty of sexy side dishes around her. And as for Feathered Hearts?

    Still working on Midnight Rising...

At the rate of about 800-1000 words a day. That’s my key to getting stuff done that’s causing you issues; just be sure you put at least a little time in on it this day to have some forward momentum. The two chapters are now up to 24,100 words. I’ll work on it more this weekend, at least around continuing work around the maps and battle graphics I’m making for Feathered Hearts.

Did two things this past weekend...

First, I ran 10k for the first time in two months after laying off that long to let my ankle bursitis subside, trying to allow the area to generally heal up. It appears that it worked. To my delight, there was no ankle pain after and I hadn’t even lost much stamina thanks to hitting an elliptical machine twice a week for an hour instead of jogging. My upper legs are another matter, though.

C&C chapter 40 entering prereads tonight + teaser

Much as I didn’t want to, I made the decision to break it up since the full length of the War Council meeting had exceeded 20,000 words and will probably approach 25k for the now-two chapters before all is said and done. The breakpoint itself will be between learning about the general war situation both Aricia and the Griffon Kingdom face, and then discussing what in all the Crows they’re going

Into the Storm has been reorganized, plus update on Feathered Heart · 7:01pm Feb 7th, 2021

Just wanted to let everyone know that Into the Storm has been reorganized into a magnum opus containing several discrete stories as opposed to a single enormous one. The story page and chapter names have been updated to reflect this, with the former now given subheadings that describe the individual stories, while the latter reflects their place in the individual story they're a part of.

Why? Well, as I discussed with some commenters in earlier blog posts, I decided this was the solution to the issue of not being able to break up the story into smaller chunks without losing readership and like counts due to the Fimfiction sequel curse. So Into the Storm now consists of three stories, with two already finished and the third in progress. And when that story ends, I'll simply start a fourth one.

The current story names are The War Begins, Rally and Recover, and Second Offensive, in that order.

Note the order of chapters themselves has not changed (with the exception of moving the appendix to after the first story and before the second), but my hope is that this provides readers with a digestible series of smaller stories instead of a single unwieldy one, with the stories breaking at climactic points, like the final Battle of Epsilon and Gavian's epic duel with Thunderbolt. I've also done at least a little retconning of story ending/beginning chapter to reflect the break. Can't promise there won't be more retcons later.

I'll also be posting a new chapter soon, but don't get too excited--it'll be a new Appendix to provide more of a breakpoint between the second and third stories. It'll consist of the unit icons I'm using for my graphics, to provide a ready reference for anyone who needs them. It should be up in a day or two. Thanks for your indulgence.

As for everybody's favorite modern Griffon/US Marine military crossover fic, I'm now five chapters into Feathered Heart edits, and I'm leaning more and more towards posting it as a new story, as I think the updated chapters are different enough. But only if the mods agree. If they do, you'll be seeing a new story on my account within a week or so. More on that later.

Do these retcons affect the story enough that one might have to reread the story? Feathered Heart is on my TRL list.

Nope. I’m not changing any of the major Feathered Heart plot points or story progression. Just heavily editing/expanding the existing stuff for the most part to incorporate new lore that wasn’t around when he initially wrote the story nine years ago. It may mean different dialogue or extra detail or even alternate explanations in some cases, but the intention is to write the continuation so it’ll fit either version of the story.

So by all means, read the original. In fact, I strongly encourage you to do so. It’s a superb early-fandom story from the heyday of the Gentlemanverse. The greatest praise I can give it is this: it’s a story concept that should not work—a modern day griffon/US military crossover thriller set in the Gentlemanverse with Gilda as its main protagonist—but thanks to its original author, it very much does. And when you’re done with it, you can decide whether give my coming edited and expanded version a read.

What about the retcons for Firefly?

Oh. No, they don’t affect it at all.

This is a good solution. And I look forward to covering your work... when I get to it. I just have to get this story I'm working on out of me!

That is a very satisfying Story > Sub-story > Chapter structure to look at.

Love the new organization! Looks great! :yay:
